• Astrology During Pisces

The Sun enters the sign of Pisces on February 18th at 4:04 p.m., Mountain Time. Pisces is a water sign and is associated with the dreamy Neptune. Pisces is the last sign of the Zodiac and represents wisdom and intuition. Many artists, healers, counselors, psychics and yoga instructors are Pisces. This sign likes altered states of consciousness and just needs to pick the most positive way to get into another space. Meditation or medication is often their choice . . . or maybe both.

The month of Pisces starts with a bang as the next day, February 19th, is a Super Moon Full Moon in Virgo. The Full Moon cycle is coinciding with the change of the signs, which doesn’t happen often. It’s just bringing the new sign more energy right at the beginning of the sign. Here is the definition of a Super Moon, according to Wikipedia: super moon is a full moon or a new moon that nearly coincides with perigee—the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its elliptic orbit—resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as viewed from Earth.

This month will bring a Mercury retrograde that will last from March 5th – 28th. Mardi gras is on March 5th and is a fascinating combination with the retrograde. Is it the last night to party before the retrograde begins? Even though many don’t look forward to retrogrades, it is actually the best time to rethink, regroup and refocus. It’s perfect for doing Feng Shui and letting go of things. Do I really need that or could someone else use it more than I could? This Mercury retrograde is in Pisces, so it will have a focus on art, music and creativity. Do you want to paint that wall and redecorate a room? Now is the time. Also, since Pisces is the intuitive of the Zodiac, take some time to reflect on your life. Maybe it’s time to actually start meditating and not just talking about it.

This is a huge astrological event happening this month that is called an ingress. When a planet enters a new sign, it’s called an ingress. This is a big one. The slow-moving planet, Uranus, will be entering the sign of Taurus on March 6th.  Uranus remains in a sign for about nine years and will therefore be in Taurus until 2026. This marks a new phase in society. Uranus is the Rebel of all the planets and his purpose is to bring drastic change to a slow-moving world. Anything outdated and antiquated will be gone fairly soon. The domain of Taurus will be the area of change. This earth sign is involved with money, business, real estate, the environment and security in general. The stable sign of Taurus doesn’t like sudden changes at all, so it is not a natural sign for Uranus to enjoy easily. They are at odd with each other just because of their different personalities. Who is the strongest and will win? Uranus will always win and change the sign. . Even stubborn Taurus. But it will be a struggle to say the least. New styles of commerce, specifically online shopping, have totally changed how people shop. Big box stores are likely going away like the dinosaurs. If Uranus represents technology and Taurus is bio systems, this phase will bring the beginning of cyborgs. Chips will be implanted. This is such an important ingress that I wrote an entire article about what will happen during this phase. Here is that article if you want to be refreshed. http://susiecox.com/blog/uranus-in-taurus-barcelona-is-beckoning

Here is an excerpt from that article:

Uranus is the genius of the Zodiac and is associated with inventions and new technologies. Uranus moves society forward by breaking down old paradigms. Any oppression is targeted by Uranus and will not be tolerated. This is collective consciousness on a global scale for the purpose of dismantling the old to rebuild it better. Anything antiquated will be upgraded. The internet is a perfect Aquarian concept with people connecting with each other all over the world, yet remaining separate. Social media is totally Uranus. Radical change, verging on chaos is necessary to have a resurrection. Expect the unexpected! Lightening is the weather connected with Uranus. The ideal of Uranus is for each and every person to have a voice – and use it personally and collectively. (It is interesting to note that as I write this, the US government is shutdown with no progress being made to reopen it).

As far as the visible planets, Mars is the lone planet in the evening sky, except for them the Moon travels past him as the Moon heads toward the Full Moon. The rest of the visible planets are in the predawn sky. If you get up about ½ before sunrise, you will see brilliant Venus, bright Jupiter and dim Saturn along the Ecliptic. For an added treat, the Moon will move past them all from February 28th – March 2nd. Yes, it will be worth getting up early to see them.

See you next time for Aries and the Spring Equinox!

Please go out on February 23rd and 24th and you will be pleasantly surprised at how much fun you will have. The sexy side of Scorpio will want to come out and play.

    Sagittarius

You will likely feel some restlessness the last week in February. Are you in the mood for a road trip? This is the week. Be spontaneous and choose a destination that is new to you and is maybe out of your comfort zone. You are ready to try something that scares you a little . . . just a little.

    Capricorn

Capricorn is the sign en Vogue now and will be for quite a few years. There is a party of slow-moving planet in Capricorn now.  In fact, just tell people you are a Capricorn and you will likely be the focus of attention. Not that Capricorns particularly care to be in the limelight, but you do like to learn about yourself. These next few years are your best times to come into your own. Are you ready?

    Aquarius

Lucky Aquarius! Venus, the planet of beauty and joy, will be in your sign from March 1st – 25th. This is definitely your time to indulge in your senses. Pampering yourself is a necessity and not a choice during those dates. Are you ready for a new look? New clothes? Maybe a new hairstyle? Do it and blame it on Venus.

  • Chinese Astrology: Year of the Earth Pig 2019

Welcome to the Chinese New Year! On February 4th, the Earth Pig will take over 2019, at least in Chinese astrology. It is said that a Pig year brings goodwill and prosperity and is one of the most beloved animals in their Zodiac. I have an Asian friend and called this the year of the Boar. She corrected me and said the Boar was too hard or mean of an image and she preferred to call it the Piggy and she always looks forward to a Piggy year. So Piggy it is.

The Chinese New Year starts on a different date each year and yes, is astrologically based. The beginning of their New Year is at the sunset on the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice. This is based on the sunset in China.  Their system differs from western astrology but they do have some similarities. Both systems use 12 signs, but the Chinese call them animals. Where Chinese astrology is the most different is with the elements. Western astrology uses four elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Chinese astrology uses five elements: Metal, Fire, Wood, Water and Earth.

The Chinese have a 60-year system and here is how it works. Each year the sign changes but the element stays the same for two consecutive years. For example, last year was the Earth Dog and this year is the Earth Pig. Next year, 2020, will start a new element and animal combination and will be the Metal Rat. So 12 x 5 = 60 and then the cycle begins again. When a person is 60 years old, that year will be the same combination as when he or she was born.

Let’s get to know this Boar or Piggy. It sounds like the Piggy is anything but boring; in fact, he is known to live life to the fullest or even to excess. The Piggy is considered to be the nice guy of all the animals. He’s honest, sincere, friendly and charitable. He wants everyone to get along with each other and creates harmony with his lenient and easy personality. He is very interested in bringing together communities through social work and tolerance for all types. Diplomacy is his strength.

But as with all the animals, he does have weaknesses. The Piggy’s challenge revolves around overindulgence and not knowing when to stop. He lives life to the fullest and then a little more for good measure. Therefore, weight control is often an issue with this animal. Whims and distractions are also areas that need work. In addition, there is often a condescendence and arrogance with the Pig.

Now let’s overlay the element of Earth and see how it influences this typically, flamboyant Piggy. Luckily the Earth element will bring a more peaceful, sensible and stable type of a Pig. Earth will make him more productive and steadier than the normally gullible Pig. This type of a Pig will be more likely to steer clear of problems and instead reach for harmony.

The year of an Earth Pig is said to bring goodwill and is a great year for business and prosperity. People will feel more free and tolerant in a year with the relaxed attitude of the Earth Piggy. In fact, so free that lavish gifts and extravagance might be a trend. This year will find us entertaining much more and being involved with social events and fundraisers. Friends will be easier to make with the tolerant and expansive way of this fun-loving Piggy. Although prudence in financial matters is important.

Overall, this seems to be one of the luckiest of all the animal and element combinations. So have big fun in 2019 while still striking a balance in your life. Get lots of rest and give back to the world. I’m sure the Earth Piggy will be very happy with that.

  • Astrology During Aquarius

The Sun enters the sign of Aquarius on January 20th at 2:01 a.m., Mountain Time. Aquarius is an air sign and is associated with the Rebel, Uranus. Aquarius is the sign that likes to change everything up. Equality is the essence of Aquarius. The internet is their domain. We all have a little Aquarius in us and we will feel that part come to life this month.

Not only will the Sun enter Aquarius on January 20th, but there is also a Lunar Eclipse on the very same day. A Lunar Eclipse always occurs on the Full Moon, which mean this Eclipse will be in the sign of powerful Leo. In addition, this one happens to be a Super Moon on top of being in Leo. Right now there is a huge party of planets in Capricorn, which are involved with this Lunar Eclipse, making it every more important. An Eclipse is the time to release whatever no longer serves you.  What do you want to change? Since there are so many planets involved with this Eclipse, make is bold and swift.

Mercury will enter Aquarius on January 23rd and will have a quick run through that sign. It will change into Pisces on February 10th. Aquarius is about technology, so get any new gadgets you received for Christmas figured out before Mercury enters dreamy Pisces. Mercury in Aquarius is a good time to make quick decisions in your life, especially combined with an Eclipse season. Make up your mind and just do it!

Mars entered his sign of Aries on New Year’s Eve and will move into Taurus on February 14th. The second week in February, both Mars and the Moon will join volatile Uranus and will bring a time for people speaking up. Surprises are likely.

We are in for a real treat in the predawn sky! Brilliant Venus will be joining bright Jupiter now through the end of January. The Moon will join them both on January 30th through February 1st for a spectacular display in the predawn sky. Make sure to get up ½ hour earlier than sunrise and look above the eastern horizon. It doesn’t get much better than this, folks!

Not only are Venus and Jupiter a beautiful sight in the sky, but they will also bring a positive time for us. This will only last for about 1 week, but see if you can catch the good luck and abundance they have as a team. Expect something big and beautiful to happen and it likely will.

We also have another cycle beginning. On February 4 will start the Chinese New Year of the Earth Pig. It is said that a Piggie year brings a positivity and cooperation. I’ll be writing an entire article talking about the Piggie. This is quite a month astrologically with an Eclipse and Chinese New Year starting. It feels like this will be a turning-point year with a start like this!

See you next month in Pisces!

  • What's Up for your Sign?

    Aquarius

Happy Birthday, dear Aquarius. This will be an outstanding birthday month for you. Mercury, the planet of intelligence and communication, is traveling with your Sun the entire month. You are usually brilliant, but this will bring your brilliance to a higher level. This is a perfect time to get caught up on correspondence, or to upgrade your technology.

    Pisces

Your planet, dreamy Neptune, is in your sign of Pisces now and will remain there for another six years. This is your phase in life to deeply figure out who you are inside. Your power dates this month are in the first week of February and would be the best time to take a retreat, be quiet and listen to your wise intuition.

    Aries

How lucky are you now, Aries! Your planet, Mars, is traveling through Aries now and will be there until February 15th. Aries is the warrior of the Zodiac and you have definitely been feeling the high energy of Mars lately. This is your time to be as strong as you can possibly manage. Other people might be intimidated by you right now and that’s ok. There is no way you can hold in your light, even if they don’t like it. Shine brightly, Aries!

Gemini is the smarty pants of the Zodiac and you are even getting smarter. Jupiter is aligning with your Gemini now and is stimulating your creative mind. This entire month is good for communication but see if you can use it for more than normal emails. Jupiter is associated with business, expansion, marketing and publishing. Can you really write that book inside of you? The answer is Yes!

    Cancer

You are in a strong time of personal growth in your life now. An important point in astrology, called the North Node, is in Cancer until mid-2020. This Node is the point of destiny in astrology and is only in your sign once every 19 years. This is your phase to define your perfect lifestyle and know that you can live it. Things will be much easier to get accomplished now.

    Leo

The Full Moon will be in Leo this month. But true to Leo, this is not just a regular Full Moon and is instead a Super Moon. It gets even better that that because this Full Moon is an Eclipse in Leo. Its name is: a Super Moon Lunar Eclipse in Leo. How grand for you! Leos are always the center of attention and this Super Moon will propel you into the public eye. What do you want to show everyone?

    Virgo

There is a party of planets in Capricorn that is supporting your Sun in Virgo. The end of January is the best time this month to look at your finances or business in a new way. Archive 2018 and organize your files for 2019. While all this disciplined energy is around you . . . make your plans for this coming year. Virgo, the Perfectionist, always likes a timeline.

    Libra

The end of January will likely bring a settlement with an unfinished situation that has triggered off deep emotions. This is all teaching you how to stand up and speak your mind with others, even though they seem stronger or have more authority. It’s all a test for you and when you pass it, you will feel more powerful than you have since it all began. When you feel relieved -- you will be free.

    Scorpio

With the party of Capricorn planets moving through your house of money, now is the time for you to regroup your finances. Scorpio is the strategist of the Zodiac and enjoys looking at investments and playing the mogul. If you aren’t happy with your lifestyle, make some decisions and redirect your focus. After all, you are a Scorpio and can do anything you want . . . and when you want it.

    Sagittarius

You are always lucky, since you are a Sagittarius, but now is an extra lucky time for you. Jupiter, who is your planet, is now joined by beautiful Venus and are both in Sag and will exactly meet on January 23rd. Expand your horizons and reach out to the world to let it know your intentions. This is a very rare alignment in Sagittarius, so have the confidence to live your dreams. At least have a big, wild party!

    Capricorn

Capricorn is the sign that all astrologers are talking about now and will be for quite a while. Most of the slow planets are forming a big grouping or party in Capricorn that will dominate astrology until mid-2020. This alignment will never happen again like this and it is the time for all Capricorns to come into their own power. Many of you will be changing your lives drastically coming up soon. Give yourself to permission to let go of the past and start anew. If not now . . . when?

  • Preview of 2019 or Capricorn, Capricorn, Capricorn

We have the New Year of 2019 upon us and this is a good time to take an astrological peak at what’s coming up for us all. The main astrological trend now is an important grouping of planets in Capricorn that will be there into 2020. At the peak of this Capricorn era, there will be five planets in that sign. That’s fully half of the Solar System in one place. No, that doesn’t happen often, but it does occur. So why is this one so important? It is made up of the slowest planets and therefore is rare and lasts a long time. Right now the intense Pluto, serious Saturn and the karmic South Node are all in the taskmaster sign of Capricorn. Ok, none of that sounds like very much fun to me. It looks like we’re in for some challenges, collectively. I call myself Ms. Positivity, but my Word of the Year for 2019 is Heavy.

Let’s face it; we’ll all be acting like Capricorns if half of the planets are in that sign. There will be an overwhelming air of serious and business energy in the world. Of course, as with all signs, there are both positive and negative parts of the sign. With such a big party in Capricorn, I want to be candid about all sides of this stern sign.

I’ve named Capricorn the Executive of the Zodiac because they just innately know how to get things done and done right. Saturn is their planet and my nickname for Saturn is Mr. Responsibility. This sign naturally exudes confidence, determination, organization, discipline and therefore, results. Everything with Capricorn is about what they accomplish, their success and status. This makes them natural managers and business professionals. They are typically sophisticated and enjoy luxury, even if it’s a rustic ranch in the country. Capricorn is the authority figure of all the 12 signs of the Zodiac and needs to be in charge.

Even though these are admirable traits, their extremes can verge on being a tyrant. Unevolved Capricorn can be rigid, self-righteous, ultra-conservative, controlling, pessimistic and cold. It’s like the mean landlord who only cares about the bottom line of money and not his tenants. Money is God for the low side of Capricorn.

Now let’s get to know the planets that are transiting through this strong sign. At the peak of this Capricorn era, these are the planets who will be in Capricorn: Pluto, Saturn, Jupiter and the South Node. Mars will join them all from February – April 2020 to give them a kicker.

Pluto is the slowest planet and will be in Capricorn the longest (2008 – 2024). Pluto is all about rebirth and transformation, so this is the time the structure of corporate business, government and everything that Capricorn represesnts will be changed. Saturn rules Capricorn and will bring an extra layer of heaviness from December 2017 – December 2020. It will be like having two Saturns, when one is surely enough. Jupiter is the other planet who will join this Capricorn party . . . or rather a meeting,  and will be in Capricorn from December 2019 – December 2020.  Saturn doesn’t know how to party very well and prefers work. The presence of Jupiter will make all this driven energy much, much bigger. Excess is one of the challenges of Jupiter and that will be easily seen this phase.

Now let’s add the not-very fun South Node. He’s the Karmic point of release from the past. The North Node represents new beginnings and destiny, while the South Node is about letting go of what is obsolete and no longer necessary. I’ve named the South Node the Hero of this Capricorn grouping, since its purpose is to let go of the old.

Putting all this together, 2019 will be a transition year leading to the culmination of the Capricorn grouping, which will happen early 2020. Since Capricorn is associated with corporations, the elite, big business, conservative thought, authority and capitalism . . . 2019 will be the record peak year for the old to prevail. The year will seem dense, heavy and driven. But remember, we all have access to this strong, accomplished focus of Capricorn and not just the authority figures.

I know this might all sound pretty intense, which it is, but the planets are luckily always moving forward into new signs. What is the sign after capitalistic Capricorn? The Rebel, Aquarius! In March 2020, both Saturn and Mars enter Aquarius right around the Spring Equinox. That will mark the beginning of an era of Aquarius that will be with us for many years. Pluto enters Aquarius in 2023 and doesn’t leave until 2043! So 2019 is the beginning of the end for Capricorn. I think this phase shows the early labor pains of the birth of the Aquarian Age.

Here are the most important celestial events happening in 2019:

    • The year of 2019 starts off with a bang when Mars enters its own sign of Aries on December 31st, 2018 and will remain there until February 15th. That could make for some wild festivities on New Year’s Eve and will definitely begin the year with a powerful need for moving forward. Mars in Aries is the profile of the hero or the bully. Both will be seen easily with this transit.
    • Uranus will enter Taurus on March 8th, 2019 and will remain there until April 2026. Many will experience sudden changes this year. It might be the time to move, have a new career or new lifestyle with this transit. We will see revolutionary changes with money. Change is the keyword for Uranus.
    • Jupiter will enter Capricorn in December 2019 and will remain there until December 2020. Jupiter will join the grouping of slow planets, bringing a crescendo to the Capricorn phase.
    • Uranus trine Jupiter and the South Node. When the planet of change, Uranus, enters Taurus, it will be have a positive, blue line to both Jupiter and the South Node in Capricorn. Both Taurus and Capricorn are earth signs and are very supportive and compatible with each other. This positive angle happens from December 2019 until May 2020 and will bring a cooperative collaboration between many groups that have previously not gotten along. This will end the year of 2019 on a very positive note.

    Mercury Retrogrades

Retrogrades are the best time to rethink, release and regroup. The sign Mercury is retrograding in determines the area of letting go. These are great times for serious house cleanings and Feng Shui.

    1. March 5th – March 27th. This retrograde will be in dreamy Pisces. This would be a good time to look at your art and beauty. Maybe paint that wall a colorful color. Organize your clothes closet. Stay grounded.
    2. July 7th – August 1st. This retrograde is what I call a hybrid and starts in Leo and ends up in the sign of Cancer. Change around your living room or family room, ending up in the kitchen. Make plans for a family reunion for early to mid-August.
    3. October 31st – November 21st. This retrograde is solidly in intense Scorpio. Focus on doing changes in your bedroom. Do you need a new comforter or pillows? Or maybe reorganize your finances.

    Eclipses

There are two eclipse seasons each year with a Solar and Lunar Eclipse two weeks apart each time, which creates four yearly eclipses. This is a special year because we will have five eclipses this year. Why is that . . . because the very first eclipse will land early in the year on January 5th. The very last eclipse will land at the end of the year on December 26th, so one more eclipse got squeezed into 2019. It doesn’t mean anything except how the eclipse seasons synched up with our yearly calendar.

    1. Partial Solar Eclipse at 15 Capricorn on January 5th
    2. Total Lunar Eclipse at 0 Leo on January 21st.
    3. Total Solar Eclipse at 10 Cancer on July 2nd
    4. Partial Lunar Eclipse at 24 Capricorn on July 16 - 17

There is a change happening now with our Eclipses. First, the definition of an Eclipse is when the Sun and Moon line up with the Nodes, which are intersecting points and determine the location of an Eclipse. A Lunar Eclipse happens during the Full Moon and a Solar Eclipse can only occur during a New Moon. But both of them need the Nodes there to create an Eclipse. So what is different now? The Nodes have an orbit, just like the planets do. Their orbit is 18.6 years and transits a person’s chart with that orbit or interval. So therefore, the Nodes stay in a sign for about 1 ½ years. On November 7, 2018, the North Node entered Cancer and the corresponding South Node entered Capricorn. They are always the same degree in opposite signs.

The Eclipses will now be mostly occurring in Cancer and Capricorn until May 2020. (The last Eclipse in Leo will be the Total Lunar Eclipse on January 21st). If the North Node is destiny and it is in the sign of Cancer, it means that community and  people connecting will become more important. If the South Node is releasing the old and it is in Capricorn, it means that corporations and the mean landlord won’t be as important. That’s why I’ve named the South Node the Hero, because he offers a perfect release point for all the end of this Capricorn phase.

This is a momentous time in history and it is all that astrologers are talking about or researching now. You will undoubtedly be reading other articles about this rare alignment. This is a universal phase that the entire world will experience. Personally, we can use this time to weed out the old in our lives in preparation for a new beginning.

Chinese Year of the Earth Pig

Each year the Chinese New Year starts on a different date. The very beginning of their New Year is at sunset on the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice. This is based on the sunset in China. This year that magic date is February 4th. Just like western astrology, the Chinese Zodiac also has 12 signs or they call them animals. Where Chinese astrology differs from western astrology is with the elements. Western astrology has only four elements compared to Chinese astrology that uses five elements. The western elements are fire, earth, air and water. The Chinese elements are metal, fire, wood, water and earth.

The Chinese astrology system differs from western astrology with their 60-year system. Here is how it works: Each year the sign changes but the element stays the same for two consecutive years. For example, last year was the Earth Dog and this year is the Earth Pig. Next year, 2020, will start a new element and animal and will be the Metal Rat. So 12 x 5 = 60 and then the cycle begins again.

The Pig or the Boar is considered the nice guy of the animals. He’s friendly, honest, sincere and charitable. He wants everyone to get along with each other and fosters harmony through his leniency and easy ways. The Pig is usually a good fund raiser because of his love of social work and bringing communities together. He is very tolerant and can identify with many types of people. Diplomacy is his strength.

But the Pig does have weaknesses which revolve around excesses and overindulgence. They live life to the fullest and then a little more for good measure. Weight control is often an issue with this animal. Whims and distractions are also areas that need work. There is often a condescendence and arrogance with the Pig.

That explains the basic Pig personality and we can overlay that with the element of earth. This element will bring a more peaceful, sensible and stable type of a Pig. The earth element makes him more productive and perseverant than a normally gullible Pig. This type steers clear of problems and instead reaches for harmony.

The year of an Earth Pig is said to bring goodwill to all. It is a great year for business and prosperity. People will feel more free and tolerant in a year with the relaxed attitude of the Pig. In fact, so free that lavish gifts and extravagance might be part of the norm. This year will find us entertaining much more and being involved with social events. Fundraising is favored this year. Friends will be easier to make with the tolerant and expansive way of this fun-loving Earth Pig. Prudence in financial matters is important. But it looks like this year will bring some wonderful gatherings and parties.

    Visible Planets

Even though there will be five Eclipses this year, not one of them will be visible in the US. So no Eclipse parties easily this year, folks, at least in the US. Also, planetary viewing favors early risers, since many of the planets will only be visible in the predawn sky. Jupiter, Saturn and Venus will all be in visible in the morning sky until June or so when they start emerging in the evening sky. They will remain in the evening sky until the end of the year when they will all get lost in the glow of the Sun, only to return to the morning sky again. Ahh, I love that forever cycle of planets.

    • Venus will be the “Morning Star” from now until July 8th. The she will emerge as the “Evening Star” from September through the end of the year.
    • Mars will be the only visible planet in the evening sky, where he can be seen until July18th. Mars can be seen in the morning sky from October 17 through the end of the year.
    • Jupiter will be in the morning sky with Venus and Saturn from now until June 10th, when he will emerge in the evening sky and remain there until December 15th.
    • Saturn is in the morning sky from now until July 9th when he will emerge in the evening sky and remain there until December 27th.

    Summary

Even though this year will be dominated by the stern Capricorn, it seems like it will be balance out nicely with Chinese astrology. The lenient and easy-going Earth Pig might be the saving grace to offer some kindness and joy to the serious Capricorn goat. It seems that there is a warning of overindulgence and debauchery. Hey, a little might be necessary to mellow out all that Capricorn, but balance is the keyword here. If we can all focus that Capricorn energy on kindness and charity, the year will indeed be favorable.

    A hearty welcome to 2019!

  • Astrology During Capricorn

The Sun enters the sign of Capricorn on December 21st at 3:24 p.m., Mountain Time. Capricorn is an earthy earth sign and is associated with the taskmaster, Saturn. I’ve named Capricorn the Executive of the Zodiac. If you want a big project done, and on time, ask a Capricorn. Their planet Saturn is Mr. Responsibility and his work ethic transfers to Capricorn very naturally.

The first day of Capricorn always marks the Winter Solstice. So December 21st will officially be the first day of the new season of winter. For those who live in the Northern Hemisphere, this will be the shortest day of the year and the longest night. It is opposite for our friends who live in the Southern Hemisphere. So we now have three month until spring starts. Ahh, I love this yearly cycle that is always dependable.

Many celebrate this time as the darkness before the light returns. The Sun actually stands still for a few days on the Solstice, almost seeding the dark. Even though this is the greatest time of darkness, it is also the time of the greatest hope with the knowing that the Sun and the light will return. This pause has given humanity the opportunity to delve into the depths of our collective soul. Take some time for you to reflect on this last year.

The ancients recognized the Winter Solstice as the end and beginning of the year. Hope and patience are part of this season. Since this is a collective human experience, we could all imagine this time as the ending of a cycle, with the promise of new – just like the sunrise. If this season is about honoring the light to come, then this Winter Solstice is a special one because the Full Moon occurs the very next day on December 22nd.  This would be a good year to be involved with Winter Solstice celebrations or meditation to project a collective spirit of light to the world.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will have a Moon in private Scorpio. Don’t feel bad if you aren’t in the mood for wild parties. This might be a more introspective ending and beginning of a New Year. Even though the year ends with quiet Scorpio, the beginning of 2019 begins with a bang. Mars enters his own sign of Aries, on December 31st. When the year starts with such dynamic, forward-moving energy, it just has to set a theme for the year. Be physical on the first day of the year by taking a hike or starting an exercise plan.

The other dramatic beginning to 2019 will be a Solar Eclipse on January 5th in Capricorn. The corresponding Lunar Eclipse will occur two weeks later on January 20th. An Eclipse season is always a good time to make a change in your life and these Eclipses are strong since so many planets are involved. Make changes now!

The visible planets are moving to the morning sky, so Mars is the only planet easily visible in the evening sky now. Saturn is pretty much lost to the glow of the Sun. But what a treat this is for early risers. If you wake up about ½ hour before sunrise, you will see Venus and Jupiter just peeping over the horizon now. Start the year out right with looking at them. On January 1st – 4th, the Moon will be joining them above the eastern predawn sky. What a great way to start the New Year of 2019!

Enjoy your holidays and see you next month for the Aquarius.

  • What's Up for your Sign during Capricorn

    Capricorn

Happy Birthday, dear Capricorn! You are the center of attention now, Cap, and will be for quite a while. Including the Moon, there will be five planets plus the South Node all in Capricorn on January 4th – 6th.  Plus, there is a Solar Eclipse in Capricorn on January 5th. New changes are coming.

    Aquarius

The South Node has been in Aquarius for the last 18 months and has just left your sign. That point in the sky refers to releasing old patterns, so hopefully you have recently let go of anything that was holding you down. You can take is a bit easier now, Aquarius. Yes!

    Pisces

Busy Mars has been in Pisces since November 16th and will leave Pisces on the very last day of the year – December 31, 2018. Do a ritual of release on New Year’s Eve to complete this Marsy cycle. Write what you have learned on a piece of paper and burn it. Have the intention of freedom.

    Aries

You are in for a wild ride, Aries, because Mars will be rushing into Aries on December 31st. This might be a year that you want to go out to a party. Have fun, but be safe. What a great way to start the New Year with your planet. Yes, starting an exercise plan is perfect for a New Year’s intention.

    Taurus

There is quite a party of planets in Capricorn now that is supporting your earthy Tausus. Start the New Year with an indepth plan for 2019. This will be a good money year for you, dear Taurus. Use it to your benifit. Taurus is the sign of luxury, after all.

    Gemini

The party of planets in Capricorn is in your Gemini house of other people’s money now. The New Year of 2019 will bring you financial opportunities and pretty early in the year. Now is the time for you to plan what you are going to be doing with all that money. Great homework for you, creative Gemini.

    Cancer

The Full Moon is in your sign of Cancer this month on December 22nd. This will be a special Full Moon, since the Winter Solstice will happen one day before it on December 21st. Many people around the world celebrate the Winter Solstice and the Full Moon will just bring more light to the winter and also to you!

    Leo

The Moon will be in your sign of Leo on Christmas Day. So you will feel like shining a bit more this holiday because the Moon is backing you up. Everyone will be more animated and maybe noisier than they were last year. Have big Leo fun!

    Virgo

The last week of 2018 will have a perfect triangle in earth signs that will support your Virgo Sun. If you can, take some time off that week and focus on you. The Virgo in you will want to make sure this year is completed properly. That earth triangle will help you accomplish just that.

    Libra

This holiday will bring some friends and family gatherings that don’t happen that often. Bring an old photo album so people can talk about family memories. Make comfort food and give a lot of hugs.

    Scorpio

The retrograde of Venus in your sign is over, but Venus is still in Scorpio until January 6th. So make sure you pamper yourself this holiday season. Is a spa day in your Christmas stocking? Ask Santa and you’ll get it. Hey, you have to honor Venus.

    Sagittarius

Venus will enter Sagittarius on January 7th and will be getting close to Jupiter the entire month of January. It is a Very fortunate cycle to have Jupiter and Venus joining in your sign. They bring joy, expansion and lots of fun. This will be a wonderful start to the New Year of 2019!

  • Venus Found Her Voice

The infamous Venus Retrograde in Scorpio has just ended and it seems she found her voice. In my last article, called “Venus Retrograde Gone Wild”, there was a line explaining that this alignment was like “A scorned woman seeking revenge”. When I wrote that line, it just jumped out of me without thinking about it. At the time it seems pretty extreme, but I can see now that it was precisely accurate. The world has change since that recent Venus Retrograde and I don’t think it will ever be the same.

With amazing timing, the US Mid-term elections occurred during this strong retrograde. It seems my prophecy was right, because not only did women vote in record numbers, but ran for office and got elected in record numbers too. This election was historic for many reasons and the results correlate perfectly with the current astrology trend. It always works that way, but I do admit that even after all these years as an astrologer, I’m still amazed at the accuracy of this ancient technique of reading the sky.

Two years ago I wrote an article called,”The Global Civil Rights Movement”, after the last presidential election. I needed to take a look at the big picture astrologically to understand this phase in our history. Now that I look back on it, everything makes total sense. Here is the article to refresh yourself on the important phase we are at in humanity’s journey. http://susiecox.com/blog/global-civil-rights-movement

The essence of this global movement is that it’s the first hint of the Aquarian Age appearing. This Aquarius isn’t just for women, but for equality in general. People will all be accepted, no matter their race, gender or age. We are ending the phase of the power held by a minority of the elite and will be replaced with equality. So this is the time for us all to find our voices, but particularly women, who have had our words stopped for centuries, if not millennia. Well, that’s all changed now and I think forever, thanks to our recent wild Venus Retrograde in Scorpio. Remember the scorned woman?  Time Magazine awarded the 2017 Person of the Year to Women. Specifically it was given to the The Silence Breakers for the #metoo movement. Then 2018 is politically the Year of the Woman. Here are some statistics:

    • At least 2,019 women will be serving in the upcoming state legislatures.
    • Several states have women in the senate or governors for the first time.
    • Two Muslim women were elected to Congress.
    • Two Native-American women were elected to Congress.
    • Several openly gay, bisexual or LGBT people were elected.
    • Immigrants to this country were elected.
    • A record number of young voters emerged with a strong collective voice.

This is the very beginning of the Aquarian Age starting, folks. We are just ending the Age of Pisces and are now in what is called the “sub-Aquarian Age”, or the transition from one Age to the next. The entire cycle of precession through the Ages, or the Great Year, lasts about 25,800 years. During that time each Age of the Zodiac will last about 2,150 years. The Age of Pisces started around the birth of Christ, or a little over 2,000 years ago, so that means that the Aquarian Age is about to begin. The exact definition of the change of an Age is when the Sun’s position, at the Spring Equinox, moves to a new Zodiac sign, or constellation. We are now experiencing that transition.

How can we all welcome this new phase in history? We need to be authentic and true to our real self. If you aren’t happy with your career . . . change it. If you have been shy and not sure how to express yourself, all that will change too. We will all feel like we’re turning into an Aquarian. That sign doesn’t really care what others or the world thinks --- individuality is the most important think to that independent sign. Be yourself and be proud of who you have become. You are just perfect the way you are and now the world will know!

  • Astrology During Sagittarius

The Sun enters the sign of Sagittarius on November 23rd at 2:03 a.m., Mountain Time. Sagittarius is a fire sign and is associated with the big guy, Jupiter. Sag is the adventurer of the Zodiac and loves to either travel physically or mentally. Some are world travelers and others travel in their minds like they are jetsetters. Expansion is their goal in life and with this sign, bigger is better.

To make this Sagittarius time even more exciting, its planet, Jupiter, just entered Sag on November 9th and will stay in that sign until December 3, 2019.  Jupiter has a 12-year orbit, so it’s only in Sag one year out of 12 years . . . and this is the year! It’s like having two Jupiters or two Sagittarians at the same time. Oh yes, that’s a lot of energy. People will feel a bit restless with this combination and will want to travel or start something new, especially internationally. If you want to take that trip to Europe – this year is the time. Be adventurous!

This Sag month will start off with a Mercury retrograde. Mercury will be retrograde from November 18th through December 6th. Make sure to do your holiday shopping early, because it will probably be crazier than usual.  Plus, Mercury will retrograde in the sign of Sagittarius, to make it even a bit more energized.

One thing that is exciting this month is that the Full Moon will land right on Thanksgiving.  So the Sun will be in Sag with the Full Moon in Gemini. That will be a wonderful energy for people talking around the dinner table as they are enjoying their delicious holiday meal with friends and family. Have fun!

Recently Venus did a retrograde from October 6th through November 16th. Even though the exact retrograde is over, Venus will be in what is called the Shadow of the retrograde until December 18th. So we will all feel that intense need to be outspoken and strong until almost Christmas. Focus on what you want and see how much you can get during this time. Women will feel especially strong, since it’s Venus. Speak your mind with power.

Regarding the visible planets, things are changing. We’ve been lucky for the last few months to be able to seen most of the planets right after sunset. Now the only planets visible in the evening are Mars and Saturn. Mars is the strongest one now because Saturn will soon be lost in the glow of the Sun. So where are these planets going? Into the morning sky. Now we have Venus, Jupiter and Mercury in the eastern predawn sky. Wake up about ½ hour before sunrise and look east to see these three planets. Venus and Jupiter are very bright, but Mercury is never bright. You can use binoculars or an app on your phone to make sure you are seeing the planets.

See you next month for the Winter Solstice and Capricorn!

  • What's Up for Your Sign During Sagittarius?

    Sagittarius

Happy Birthday, lucky Sag! Why are you extra lucky now? Your planet, Jupiter, entered your sign on November 9th and will be there until December 3, 2019. Are you bored with your job….start a business of your own. Take that holiday you’ve always dreamed of -- what are you waiting for?

    Capricorn

Every astrologer is talking about your sign now and will be until mid-2020. Pluto and Saturn are in Capricorn now and will be joined by Jupiter in December 2019. The next two years in your life is the time for you to make long-range plans. Business deals finalized and accomplished. You will be shining more brightly than ever before.

    Aquarius

Mars finally left your sign on November 16th after having been there for months. You can take a sign of relief after such a long journey with the warrior. There are no planets going through Aquarius now, so take a little time for yourself to just appreciate your life. You’ve been through a lot and now is your healing time.

    Pisces

Energizing Mars is now in Pisces from November 17th until January 2, 2019. Usually Mars irritates signs, but it actually wakes up your sleep sign of Pisces. You will have stamina and higher energy than usual during the holiday season. Your creativity will come to a new height.

    Aries

The exciting and unpredictable planet Uranus is now in Aries. This combo will bring sudden changes and surprises to you. Uranus will be in Aries until March 7th, so use this time to make any changes you want – instead of Uranus doing it for you.

    Taurus

You've been given a little break while Uranus is visiting Aries. But that planet of surprises will reenter Taurus on March 8th and will bring the new life that has been building over the last few months. Make plans for a new lifestyle starting in the spring of 2019. You will have years of Uranus and excitement. Lucky you!

    Gemini

You have new financial opportunities that will be materializing during this month. Everything is on the verge for you, dear Gemini. Don’t give into impatience, because your dream is almost here.

    Cancer

You are just starting a very fortunate phase, dear Cancer. The North Node, or point of destiny, entered your sign of Cancer and will remain there until May 6, 2020. This only happens every 19 years and is your time to stand out in the crowd. Your destiny is calling – are you ready to answer?

    Leo

There are several planets this month in fire signs that are supporting your Leo Sun. Your creativity will be strong now. Maybe make some Christmas presents instead of buying everything. Your family and friends would love it.

    Virgo

The month is all about relationships for you, dear Virgo. It’s both personal and family relationships that need attention now. One person will need freedom and the other will feel abandoned. You’ll help them strike their balance.

    Libra

Venus was retrograde in Scorpio and in Libra and is now going direct. The last month was the time to work out any kinks in relationships, dear Libra. Venus will be in your sign until December 3rd. Clean up any last little remnants from the notorious retrograde.

    Scorpio

Venus was retrograde in your sign of Scorpio, but she spent the last part of the retrograde in Libra. So you get Venus in Scorpio again from December 3rd until January 8, 2019. Lucky you to have Venus visit your sign twice in a couple of months. Enjoy luxury this holiday season.

  • Venus Retrograde Gone Wild

Venus is all about love and beauty, right? Well, not all the time. Venus is going to the wild side now because of a combination of factors. This is so unusual, that it warranted an entire article to tell her story. So why is this retrograde so strange?

The main reason this Venus retrograde is so powerful is where she is doing her backwards dance in the Zodiac. She happens to be triggering off a very revolutionary Grand Square between planets in the sky her entire retrograde. So we’ll have 3 months (September 4th – December 10th) for this collective transformation to occur. Astrology connects with each of our personal charts, but it also sets a theme for society. This alignment screams “Change for the Better . . . and Now!” There isn’t much patience in this configuration. It’s fierce and it seems, because of Venus, that women will be the catalyst.

Approximately every 1 ½ years, Venus goes retrograde as she makes her revolution around the Sun. This one will be what I call a Hybrid Retrograde. Venus turned retrograde on October 6th at 10 degrees Scorpio and will turn direct on November 16th at 25 degrees Libra. Venus, Libra and Scorpio all deal with relationships. Venus has the idealistic view of romance and soulmates. Libra plays into that theme with the codependent style of that romantic sign. But Scorpio will bring intensity to the mix, with the focused storm connected with that passionate sign of mystery. With Scorpio being the sign of raw sex, secrets will be revealed that will rock even the most hardened of us. Venus retrograding in Scorpio is an example of the scorned woman who wants revenge. This is the time for women to speak their minds in their personal lives as well as on the world stage. Venus in Scorpio usually gets what it wants. Could it get any more exciting than just Scorpio? Oh yes.

Looking at the big picture, Venus will be in those few degrees for a very long time, so she will bring to life all the other planets involved with her. Ok, who could make Venus wilder . . . Mars! Venus is the feminine principle while Mars is the male. For at least the beginning of this retrograde, Mars in unpredictable Aquarius will form an uneasy square to Venus in suspicious Scorpio. People could feel an awkward distance with each other. If it’s time to end, this will clear out any relationships that are no longer working for you. It doesn’t have to mean just your lover, but you could be replacing your doctor, accountant or handyman, too. Clean out the deadwood. Eliminate energy drains.

Who is the Real wild man of the planets? It’s chaotic and radical Uranus in Aries, of course. This combo is like a feral wildcat on the loose. One of the main aspects during Venus’ wild retrograde is that she is making a strong opposition to Uranus. Actually, Venus has already started this messy opposition to Uranus. It started on September 4th and won’t end until December 10th.

Yes, we have two more, very important points that are also part of this bizarre picture. The Venus opposition to Uranus will both square the North and South Nodes, which are called the karmic indicators in the chart. When they enter the geometric picture, it brings a situation that has been occurring for a very long time. The Nodes often involve society and not just individuals. So that means we have a karmic, red, Grand Square in the sky for over 3 months. That’s a very long time to have one challenging pattern dominate the solar system. (I’m attaching a picture of the chart with this article).

So let’s put this all together. Revengeful retrograding Venus in Scorpio is square to both feverish Mars and the Karmic Nodes and is opposing the feral wildcat, Uranus. Does that sound volatile to you? It sure does to this little astrologer.

What can we expect? Retrogrades are always the times to rethink, refocus and regroup. Venus relates to art, music, creativity, emotions, and yes, to love. If you are in the mood to change any of those areas in your life, now is the time to do it with enthusiasm. The Mars square will give you a need for immediacy. But since Uranus is such a slow-moving planet, these changes that you are going to make will have a long-term impact on your life.  Be deliberate and thorough with making these big changes. Turn over every stone to see what’s hiding. Clean out your closets, cedar chests and attics. Feng shui what is tucked away and bugging you. Resolve any issues you may have with your female ancestors.

Women’s groups relating to changing society will become more verbal and visible. If you want to get involved with social change, now is the time. The mood is in the air. This window in time doesn’t happen often, so do it.

We can all either hold on tight, buckle our seatbelts in fearful anticipation, or, we can take a bold step and use this momentous time and change our lives and the world. I call it reactive astrology vs proactive astrology. We can either, react to the craziness that is happening in the world now and make it worse, or we can use this intense energy for good. Change will result from this rare alignment, so set your intentions and watch them happen.

  • What's Up for Your Sign During Scorpio?

    Scorpio

Happy Birthday, sexy Scorpio. This will be a power birthday month for you because of Venus doing a retrograde in Scorpio. From October 6th – November 16th, you will have a chance to let go of old patterns that no longer serve you. Do a purge!

    Sagittarius

Mercury is going to do a retrograde in Sag starting on Halloween and lasting until December 7th. What a great time for you to change your mental beliefs. Just naturally, you will be seeing the same things only with very different eyes. Are you in the mood for a road trip? Now is the time. Go somewhere new!

    Capricorn

November 11th – 13th are your power dates for this month. You will feel extra Capricorny and will want to get to business. If you want to wrap up the year of paperwork, now is your window to do it. Organization will come easily and is what you will want to do. Hey, it’s about time.

    Aquarius

Mars is now moving forward in Aquarius, after his months of going backwards. Have you noticed new door opening? Are you walking – no, running through the open door? Put on your running shoes and Ready, Set . . . Go! Do this now, because Mars will leave Aquarius on November 16th.

    Pisces

Mars will be entering your sign of Pisces on November 16th and will remain there until January 1, 2019. Mars will energize your more laid-back Pisces style. If you have projects on the back burner, now is the time to finish them. Being as physical as you can will make Mars happy.

    Aries

Uranus, the planet of sudden change, is now retrograding and will move back into Aries on November 7th. That slow-moving planet will be in your sign until March 6th, when it enters Taurus and will remain there. If you want to shake up your life a bit, do it during that window in time. Get a little wild - - you know you want to.

    Taurus

The Full Moon will be in Taurus this month on October 24th. It's a very powerful Full Moon because retrograding Venus is joining the mix. YOu will feel strong and will want to change patterns that are no longer working in relationships. It might be sudden and shocking . . . but ultimately it will feel good.

    Gemini

The end of October you will find yourself in front of an audience. It might not be on a stage, but people will be looking at you for advice. What is your target audience? Who do you want to connect with? It will become apparent by November.

    Cancer

There are a lot of planets in water signs now that are supporting your Sun. Be with people who love you. Reach out and hug people. Tell your loved ones how much you care about them. Volunteer.

    Leo

The very fortunate North Node has been in Leo for the last ½ years. It’s leaving on November 16th. Do everything you can now to ensure your name, recognition and reputation. Have your picture taken and do new business cards. Advertise yourself.

    Virgo

There is a group of planets in Pisces, the sign opposite to you. They’ll be rubbing off on you, so this month you will feel more creative and even a bit more sensitive than your usual stoic Virgo style. Hey, softening a bit is a good thing on occasion. Get a massage.

    Libra

Venus is doing a retrograde now. Even though it will be mostly retrograding in Scorpio, it will dip back into Libra for a bit of the cycle. So from November 1st – 16th you might revisit an old love situation. Great time to release the old bits that might be hanging on. Let it go.

  • Astrology During Scorpio

The Sun enters the sign of Scorpio on October 23rd at 4:24 a.m., Mountain Time. Scorpio is a water sign and is associated with the planet of intensity, Pluto. The sign of Scorpio is the most misunderstood of all the signs of the Zodiac. It’s also quite feared by most. The privacy of this sign is so important that communication is on a needed basis. This sign won’t be chatty . . . Ever. On their best days, they are quiet. Of course, that allows them to shine in their inner world, which is their domain. They need to focus on their projects, which usually doesn’t involve anyone else. Just leave them alone when they are not in the mood and they will be happy.

This is an active month astrologically with a couple of juicy retrogrades to experience. Remember that all retrogrades are the best times to regroup, rethink and restructure old patterns that need to be updated. Mercury will be retrograde from November 17th through December 7th. Make sure you do your Holiday shopping and preparations very early this year. The normal busy holiday season will be even crazier with Mercury retrograde. Most of the retrograde is in Sagittarius, which might give people a wild need to escape. Spontaneous travel is highlighted. Be adventurous, even if it seems indulgent.

Venus is the other planet that is doing a retrograde this month. She turns backwards from October 6th through November 16th. The retrograde of Mercury deals with mental decisions or logistics, while the Venus retrograde is more focused on matters of the heart. Even if it’s not about adjusting routines in a love relationship, it can be a time to redecorate your house or buy new art. Are you up for a new haircut with a more modern style? Maybe take this time to go through your wardrobe and give clothes away that you no longer love. Feng shui your bedroom. Change whatever looks out of place and you will feel free.

The visible planets have been putting on a show for us every evening for months, which is all changing now. I hope you got a chance to see the planets, because some of them are now only going to be visible in the predawn sky, which is harder to see on a regular basis. With Venus turning retrograde, she has disappeared in the glow of the Sun, and will not be visible in the evening sky. For early risers, Venus will become the “Morning  Star” and will soon be visible above the eastern horizon just before dawn.

Not only have we had Venus shining in the evening sky, but bright Jupiter has also been part of the show. If you have been noticing, Jupiter is in the western sky now and will also be gobbled up by the Sun, just like Venus. But there is one chance to see Jupiter before he disappears. On November 9th, the Moon and Mercury will both join Jupiter in the evening sky right above the sunset. The following month when the Moon will be there, Jupiter will be gone. So now is the time. Make a little party of the evening. Jupiter loves a party – especially when it’s for him!

The other two visible planets, Mars and Saturn, will still be visible in the evening sky for a while. During July and August, Mars was so bright and so very red, because it was closest to the Earth. Now, Mars is still fairly bright, but not as red as before. Mars will be getting dimmer as he gets farther from the Earth. But at least there are two visible planets in the evening sky.

See you next month in Sagittarius!

  • My New AstroMap

When you move or travel somewhere other than your birth place, your Astro Map changes too. Ok, that’s my nickname for Astro*Carto*Graphy, which is quite a mouthful. The more I get to know my chart as it relates to travel, the more amazed I am. This last year was my biggest year of travel in a long time. I went to India to receive my award in New Delhi. Then I spent the summer in Barcelona, Spain. Being in two new places gave me a good chance to see how different I felt in each location.

First I want to explain a little bit about Astro*Carto*Graphy. It’s a technique that shows where your planets were around the world when you were born. It’s like your birth chart on a map.  So when I was being born in Tucson, where was the Sun rising in the world and where was it setting? Where was Venus or the Moon rising and setting? The Astro Map easily shows that and much more.

People typically use Astro*Carto*Graphy to decide where to move, or where to travel for holiday, or where to start a new business. If people are interested in finding love or have an interest in the arts, I look at their Venus line. If they are asking about business, I would look at their Jupiter line. I call the Moon line a home away from home, so your Moon needs to be in a safe place where you are drinking tea in someone’s cozy kitchen. An unprotected Moon would lead to being insecure in that location, especially if it’s a big city and you don’t know anyone there. Depending on your chart, there are places in the world that are good to visit and some places not good to visit.

So what were the planetary lines was I on in these different locations: Tucson, India and Barcelona? I was born in Tucson with Jupiter rising, so the main line for me here is the international planet, Jupiter. I find it interesting that I worked at Canyon Ranch as an astrologer for 32 years. I stayed here in Tucson and greeted people from all around the world as my clients. It’s a successful planet to have prominent in a location and explains my stay at Canyon Ranch as well as my international presence as a full-time astrologer. But most of my planets are below the horizon here and add to a private lifestyle. My clients are almost all over the phone or the internet, so I don’t see many of them in person.

Let’s go to India in my chart. Saturn is the planet on my horizon in India. How perfect for this ancient and well-preserved culture. Saturn relates to the past and structured patterns. It’s a male-dominated society, which is also very saturnine. I was one of only two women who received awards with about 50 men receiving awards at the conference. So it was an honor for the both of us. The other woman, by the way, is Sasha Lee, an excellent Korean astrologer. I felt quiet and not very adventurous in such an unusual environment, which was also a Saturn style.

Barcelona called to me, even before I knew my AstroMap there. Well, the Sun was rising in Barcelona when I was being born in Tucson. I went to my sunrise there. No wonder I felt so alive. Somehow I felt like I have been dreaming my entire life and all of the sudden – I woke up! I was outgoing and met lots of new friends easily. My style changed drastically since I really loved how the Spanish women dress. I even got a new, fun haircut. Hey, I lost 10 pounds too. Since Barcelona is a pedestrian city, I realized I was walking miles each day just getting around the city.

So when you change your latitude – you do change your attitude. But it depends upon which is your predominant planet as to how you change. Moving to a Saturn line would bring a rooted, serious life. On a Mars line, you would feel very energized or impatient and restless. You would change on your Neptune line, but might not understand the change. So the planetary line you are one makes all the difference.

Maybe it’s because I spent most of the summer in Barcelona or maybe it’s because I got to know my sunrise line, but I’m different and will never be the same. I want to thank this fabulous technique of Astro*Carto*Graphy in helping me see a new part of myself come to life. I feel like my Sun is rising now.

  • Astrology During Libra

The Sun enters the sign of Libra on September 22nd at 6:56 p.m., Mountain Time. Libra is an air sign and is associated with Venus, the planet of love. Libra is all about relationships. This sign just knows how to talk to people in a personal way. Libra, who is associated with Venus, loves the arts, music and social interactions with friends. A night on the town after an art gallery opening is a fun evening for Libra. That’s why I’m named this sign, The Lovely Libra.

The sign of Libra always marks the Autumn or Fall Equinox. The year is divided up by four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Spring and Fall are named the Equinoxes while Summer and Winter are named the Solstices. On the Equinoxes, the Sun shines on both hemispheres equally, creating the day and night to be of equal lengths. The Solstices are the longest and shortest days of the year, depending if you are in the northern or southern hemisphere. Regardless, many celebrations occur on these seasons, like at Stonehenge. The Fall Equinox encourages rest and celebration after the crops have been harvested. The Full Moon on September 24th is the Harvest Moon. Many celebrations include apples and the root crops that were recently harvested. This is the time for gratitude for the abundance in your life.

Venus will be doing a retrograde starting on October 6th and not ending until November 16th. Where Mercury retrogrades are matters of the mind; Venus retrogrades are matters of the heart. This retrograde of Venus is in intense Scorpio until October 25th and then finishes her retrograde in romantic Libra. All retrogrades are times to regroup, rethink and redo. This just happens to be on the inner realm. Many will be looking at their primary relationship in a new way. Change what isn’t working. Even though it’s not easy, it’s the time for change during Venus retrograde. Venus only does this once about every 1 ½ years, where Mercury retrogrades three times a year.

Here is one of the tricks of astrology: the rarer the event, the more important it is. So a Venus retrograde is more important than Mercury retrograde. Don’t think you’ll miss this retrograde if you’re not in a relationship . . . it will still change you somehow. It might be a need to change up the art in your house. Or maybe you’re having a clothes crisis, which happens to me often. Are you in the mood for a new style or haircut? Do you want to paint that wall a bright color? These are all Venus retrograde questions. Instead of being surprised, plan for it so you can use those dates effectively. Have as much fun as you can!

About the visible planets, this is another fabulous month of seeing them in the evening sky. Right after sunset you will see brilliant Venus above the western horizon. Make sure to watch Venus now, because as soon as she turns retrograde, she will disappear in the glow of the Sun. But now right above Venus is bright Jupiter. They are getting closer together and will reach their closest proximity to each other right before Venus does her retrograde. Their closest dates will be from September 22nd until October 5th.  The Moon will move past them both on from October 9th – 11th for a magnificent sight. It doesn’t get much better than this, folks!

See you next month in Scorpio!

  • Change in Latitude = Change in Attitude

Barcelona was my home for the summer and I knew the long trip would be life changing. The rebel planet, Uranus, is playing with my chart a lot now, which always creates something new. It can be a new home, a new style and a new haircut. But it also goes much deeper to bring a new awareness of who we are inside and how we connect with the world. I was expecting a new lifestyle, new friends and new clothes, but I wasn’t expecting a new relationship with the sky.

As many people know, I have a big backyard where I watch the sky, especially the planets, every night. It’s my meditation to watch the sunset and then one by one to see each of the planets “Pop” out along the Ecliptic as it gets darker. The Moon is first, of course, then brilliant Venus and bright Jupiter. Mars is very easy to see now, since it’s close to the Earth and very bright and red. Except for Mercury, Saturn is the hardest to see, since it’s never very bright. Sometimes I’m on my chez lounge for 2 hours just watching the sky. All you have to do is just sit there and watch and you will see lots of movement in the night time sky. You might see a ring around the Moon, which is always magical. You might see a blinking satellite slowly traveling the celestial sphere. Of course, you can also see the occasional falling star. For me, the night sky rivals TV.

While I was in Barcelona, I lived in Gotico, which is a medieval barrio with very narrow, winding streets. Two blocks from my place was a 2000-year-old Roman wall. My apartment was on the 3rd floor of a 5 story building, with no elevator, oh boy! As I walked through the city at night, I could only see a little sliver of the sky at a time. It is the first time I understood who people is big cities don’t connect with the sky. You can’t see it! Yes, you might get a glimpse of the Moon, but not relative to the other planets, which is my focus. I like seeing all the planets and see how they move each night relative to each other. It’s called Relative Velocity. I have to say I’m pretty obsessed with doing that. Living in Tucson, the huge, open sky is always there so I can see my planetary friends, and nightly.

Not being able to see the planets or knowing the directions (North, South, East and West), was more disorienting that I ever expected. For the first few weeks in Barcelona, I was getting lost in the narrow, winding, streets of the barrio. I have an excellent sense of direction and Never get lost, but I just couldn’t get oriented. Then, on the evening of my birthday, I got a present from the universe. I found an open plaza, late at night, and could see the Moon and Venus. I sat there long enough to see their movement, which showed me the directions. Ok, I got my bearings. So funny, after that, I never got lost again. I felt my connection with the sky again. It made all the difference in the world for my trip and truly showed me how important the sky was to me. Here is my birthday present of the Moon and Venus over Plaza Catalunya.

The Ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun and is also where all the planets are at night. All the planets travel along the Great Highway in the Sky, or the Ecliptic. An Eclipse of the Sun and Moon can only occur along the Ecliptic. Once you see where the Sun is during the day, you can always see where the planets will be at night – on the Ecliptic.

Now that I saw where the Ecliptic was in Barcelona, I noticed something that was different that I am used to seeing in Tucson. The Sun wasn’t very high in the sky at noon! Why was that? Barcelona and Tucson are at different latitudes! The definition of latitude is “the angular distance of a place north of south of the Earth’s equator”. Tucson is at 32 degrees north latitude. Barcelona is further north and is at 42 degrees latitude.

One fun astronomical fact is that the North Star is the same number of degrees above the northern horizon as the latitude of your location. So the North Star is 32 degrees in Tucson and in Barcelona, it is 42 degrees about the horizon. Here is the trick: The North Star is always 90 degrees from the Ecliptic. So since Barcelona is located at a higher latitude, the Ecliptic is lower in the sky. I know all this visualizing is tricky, but you can do it.

There was a Total Eclipse of the Moon on July 31st, which was visible in Barcelona – lucky me! So I had to have an Eclipse party on the beach, of course. There were lots of people of the beach there just to watch the Eclipse. Somehow, there was plenty of room for everyone and with great vibes. According to my calculations, the Moon would rise over the Mediterranean Sea already eclipsed. It was a very special Eclipse for a couple of reasons. One, because of a nearly perfect alignment of the Sun, Moon and Earth, it was almost the longest Eclipse possible. In addition, Mars was the closest to the Earth at the same time and was an intense, very bright red. To our luck, Mars was exactly conjunct the Moon during the Eclipse. Ok, all this is worthy of an Eclipse party.

Unfortunately, there was a cloud bank along the eastern horizon, which blocked the Moon and Mars. But luckily, when both the Moon and Mars emerged above the clouds, the Moon was still eclipsed and we had a great show. But we had to wait about half an hour for the Moon to rise above the clouds. So, I was watching the horizon eagerly for the first glimpse of the Moon. Watching, watching, watching – but in the wrong place. Ok, this is where the difference in latitude between Tucson and Barcelona comes in. Since I was used to seeing the Ecliptic higher in the sky, I was expecting the Moon to rise where it would have in Tucson. I was wrong. Of course, the Moon rose along Barcelona’s Ecliptic.

One of my new friends, Olivier, who lives in Barcelona, was the first person to spot the Moon. He got the prize because he was used to see the Moon rise further south than I was used to. It inspired an exciting conversation about traveling the latitudes lines to see the Ecliptic from different locations on the Earth. In Sweden, the Ecliptic would be very low in the sky. In Ecuador, where you are on the Equator, the Ecliptic would be overhead. In Australia, the Ecliptic is in the north, which will reveal a completely different southern sky. Thanks, Olivier, now I have another reason to travel the world!

My stay in Barcelona made me realize that . . .  a change in latitude absolutely created a change in attitude. I was reborn as a new person with a surprisingly fresh knowledge of the sky.

  • Astrology During Virgo

The Sun enters the sign of Virgo on August 22nd at 9:12 p.m., Mountain Time. Virgo is an earth sign and is associated with the messenger, Mercury. Virgo is the perfectionist of the Zodiac and likes things just right. I call Virgo “The Fixer” and this sign has a critical eye for what works and what doesn’t. Being the best editor of all the signs, ask your Virgo friend, but only if you want an honest answer to your question.  Typical professions for Virgo are dentists, graphic artists, nutritionists and computer programmers. Another style of Virgo is the protector of the earth and therefore, many are great organic gardeners.

Last month we had two Eclipses and had both Mercury and Mars retrograding. That combination brings a lot of change in our lives. So, I’m hoping your started fresh in several different areas. This month, the main news is about Mars. That red planet is about the closest to Earth that is possible and, because of its close proximity, is much brighter and redder than usual. Make sure that you see Mars while he’s still this bright. Mars will rise in the East mid-evening and will transverse the sky all night long. It’s so bright that it looks like a big, red plane landing. The retrograde phase of Mars will last from June 28th until August 26th, when he will turn direct. Most of the retrograde was in Aquarius, which also likes change. Switch things up as much as you can now to be in the flow of Mars. If you plan it right, your changes will have occurred by the time he turns direct on August 26th.

Right after Mars turns direct in the last couple of degrees in Capricorn on August 26th, he enters revolutionary Aquarius on September 11th. Mars will stay in Aquarius all the way until November 16th. Mars is all about action and moving forward and since we had two Eclipses and some Mars retrograding time to rethink our plans, mid-November would be the time to start new.

There are two slow planets, Uranus and Saturn, who are now forming a blue line or trine between them, which is a harmonizing angle. Uranus is the Rebel while Saturn is the Businessman. When they trine each other, often new changes are implemented more easily than other times. This positive alignment will occur this entire month and is the perfect top to these recent Eclipses and retrogrades. We have no excuse to not move forward and in an organized fashion. Just plan it and do it!

Regarding the visible planets, we’re in for a treat this month. Right after sunset you can see all the visible planets, except Mercury. If you watch the sunset, look up in the western sky to see bright Venus. Getting closer to Venus is Jupiter and higher in the sky is the dimmer, Saturn. To top them all off is brilliant red Mars in the western sky. For a real show, the Moon will be joining Venus and Jupiter from September 11th – 14th. The Moon will join Saturn on September 16th. Make sure to see the Moon joining Mars on September 18th – 20th. By this time, Mars will be much less bright than during July and August. It will be interesting to see the difference in how bright Mars will be in comparison to getting dimmer in September. Ahhh, the dance of the planets is so fascinating to watch.

See you next month in Libra for the Fall Equinox!

  • The Tribal and Pagan Side of Barcelona

Barcelona is an ancient city and still observes many of the traditions from long ago. The city can be dated back to the Neolithic times and was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC. The colony only had about 1,ooo citizens and was defended by a wall, which there are remnants that can still be seen in the oldest Barrios. Barcelona was a major port for the Mediterranean and still is. It was under Muslim rule for hundreds of years and then was followed by the Christians being in control. Interestingly enough, the medieval times brought success to Barcelona when it became the economic and political center of the Western Mediterranean. The Gothic Quarter, which is where I’m staying, still has many sites dating back to the 13th century. Then the 15th to the 18th centuries brought a time of decline and ended when the city was taken by the Bourbon troops, who suppressed the rights of Catalonia. The mid-19th century brought a revival to this ancient city through the success of its textile industry.

Looking at the political unrest that is happening today, many could say that proud and outspoken Catalonia is still fighting for its independence. As an example of the Catalan spirit, ALL of the public signs are in the Catalan language and not in Spanish. Since Catalonia is partly in Spain and the rest is in France, the Catalan language is a sweet combination of Spanish and French. Hey, now that I’m getting my Spanish down, I realize now how important learning at least the basics of that language, could have really helped me. Even the sign outside of Starbucks is in Catalan.

There are demonstrations happening here all the time. There seem to be two types: one for Catalan to leave Spain and the other to free the political prisoners who have recently been arrested. The police are politely standing by in case there is any problem. But they all seem to be demonstrating in a civil type of a style. Here is a picture of one right down the street from me.

    The Tribal Side

Living here for 2 months has made me realize how important community or maintaining the tribe is here in Barcelona. The Barrios, or neighborhoods, were originally little villages that eventually grew together. Even though they are all now part of the metropolis of Barcelona, they absolutely maintain the identity of their barrio. Neighborhood fiestas are the way that people get together and they do it on a very regular basis. There seems to be a fiesta every week and sometimes several in a week, especially during the summer.

So, what actually is a fiesta? For an example, the family I’m staying with in my Airbnb has a 10-year old daughter whose class just graduated from a school year. The parents and children got together at noon on a Sunday next to the famous Santa Caterina Mercado. They set up many tables, brought food to share, cervezas were flowing plentifully and of course, the music. There is always a band with people dancing in the streets. Always. I stayed for a couple of hours, but they didn’t return from that fiesta until 11 at night. Their fiestas always seem to last almost 12 hours and I’m sure some last for days. What are the fiestas for? The reason for fiestas is so the neighbors can get to know each other as well as the kids, with everyone playing and dancing in the streets. They are very close, like extended family. This is the way they preserve their tribal connections with each other. Barcelona takes their fiestas very seriously and they are a very important part of their lives together.

One of the fiestas I was fortunate enough to experience was the procession of the gigantes, or giants. Every barrio makes their own giants, according to the style of their barrio. For example, in Barcelonetta, which was once a fisherman’s village, their gigantes are a fisherman and his wife, who has fish on her hat. Other barrios have different gigantes that reflect the history of their neighborhood. There is evidence of processions of gigantes as early as 1424 in Barcelona, starting with religious figures such as processions of Corpus Christi. In recent centuries, they have taken on less of a religious and more of a cultural style.

The procession I saw started in the sweet Plaza of El Born with all the gigantes on display for people to see up close. They were made of fiber glass with amazing clothing and gowns of incredibly rich fabrics. Once the procession started, it meandered through very narrow ancient, winding streets and ended up at the Santa Caterina Mercado. Several barrios were represented in the procession, which lasted for about 3 hours. (I’m sure they had food and more fiestas in private areas after the actual procession ended). Every barrio had different gigantes that were accompanied by their neighborhood band. Yes, the gigantes all danced with each other to their band and all the barrios had different gigantes, dances and music, which reflected the flavor of their barrio.

One of the things that fascinated me was how the entire family was involved. The large gigantes were carried by grown men. But there were chickens, fish and dwarfs who were handled by children. Under each gigante was a structure that looked like a large wooden chair with big pads so they can carry then on their shoulders. They sure looked heavy to me! Each gigante had about 5 people ready to carry it, once a carrier got tired.  The chicken had several kids to carry it who were only about 4 years old! So, you can see how they grow into the larger gigantes as they grow up. Once the chicken walked for a bit and did its little dance, everyone clapped and celebrated their display, then they changed to another child carrier. The entire family is included in their fiestas. There is no age gap here and I bet no babysitters.

One thing to note is the difference between gigantes and dwarfs and what they call the deformed ones. They seem to honor all types of individuals, including dwarfs and oddly shaped people, by making gigantes that look different, like the diversity of people. Dwarves are heads with a person inside that appear to have shortened human bodies. The peephole for the carrier is on the forehead or the hat of the figure. On the other hand, the bigheads are a prosthesis in the form of a head, usually human, that is worn on the shoulders of the carrier, giving the impression of being a deformed person, with a huge head. In this case, the carrier sees through the mouth or double chin.  Many of these smaller heads were worn by children or teenagers. I have to admit that I couldn’t tell the difference between the dwarves and the deformed ones, as they all looked a bit strange to me. Then there were those who were there to lead and maintain order in the procession. They wore cowhides, whips and bladders, which I’m sure gave them authority. I loved all the gigantes, whether they were Kings, Queens, Chickens or Dwarves.

    The Pagan Side

Now for the wilder, more raw side of Barcelona -- which they proudly call their Pagan ancestry. There are many fiestas, especially during the summer, but nothing compares with the Fiesta de Sant Joan. This year it occurred on Saturday June 23rd and celebrates the longest day of the year, (In the Northern Hemisphere), or the Summer Solstice. The origin of this celebration is pagan and is part of a group of holidays coinciding with the Equinoxes and Solstices, like Christmas. The tradition goes back to the Romans with their festival honoring their Goddess Pales, a deity of fire. Bonfires are built in all the Plazas of different Barrios with the ancient belief that the fire would scare away any evil spirits that were present. One of the honored traditions was to jump over the bonfire three times to ensure good health and happiness. There are still those who jump over the fires.

Although pagan in origin, this festival was borrowed and integrated into Christianity and renamed as the celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who was said to have been born six months before Jesus. He was of course known for baptizing Jesus. Even though this fiesta was incorporated into the Christian festivals, the pagan traditions remain strong.

The eve of Sant Joan is full of magic rituals. There are three pagan parts to this celebration: Fire, water and herbs. Tradition holds that the fire frightens away all the bad spirits and it is said that those who burn objects during this festival will be cleansed of all their sins. Fire is for purification.

Then there is the water element. As the custom goes, many wet their heads, arms and legs at the water spout on the boulevard of Passeig Sant Joan. Others jump in the sea at midnight to wash away old energy. It is said that the Barcelonian grandparents took embers and logs from the ceremonial fire and at the stroke of midnight, they threw them down the wells to purify the water. In the writings of folklorist, Amades in his book, Costumari Catala, he said that, “St. John the Baptist, apostle and evangelist, by the power vested in by God, delivers the water in this well from evil witches”. Water is for cleansing.

The other ritual done a few days before the Eve of Sant Joan, is the gathering of sacred herbs. It is said that these herbs will have strong medicinal powers if collected and used on this sacred night. The herbs are for healing.

Ok, I thought I was prepared for this evening of festivities . . . not really. It was much, much wilder than I could have ever imagined. Each Barrio prepared their plaza with their huge bonfire and then it all started. I was having a lovely dinner in Barcelonetta, a Barrio by the beach and all of the sudden I heard these loud fireworks and saw the parade lead by the Diablos, or devils. There were grown up Diablos and kid Diablos leading the wild parade with major firecrackers. Ok, what are the devils all about?

I talked to a local Barcelonian who told me that this is also a celebration of fertility and the Diablos and wild beasts were there to remind us of the potency and fruitfulness of this season. After the lead Diablos were many people in different animal costumes as well as drummers. Amazing drummers, also in costume. Hey, I’m a big lover of parades, but this topped all the parades I’ve seen, including the incredible Dia de los Muertos procession in Tucson. Ok, I finished my dinner quickly and had to follow the parade, that was heading to the beach.

Oh my, what a scene it was on the beach! There were bonfires everywhere with firecrackers and fireworks going off in the streets, on the beach and everywhere. I  have to admit it was a little disconcerting to see two-year old kids running around with firecrackers exploding all around them. Of course, clothing is optional on the beaches of Europe, so many were naked running around with fireworks! It was quite a sight to see. Ok, this party lasted all night. It really didn’t start until almost midnight and lasted until dawn, kids and all. I didn’t make it that long, but long enough to experience the wildness of this pagan night of ritualistic celebration.

Once again, I talked to my friend, who was born in Barcelona, and asked him about the danger of the fireworks and kids. He said that the parents want to teach their children about fire and fireworks early in their lives so they have no fear of fire. I laugh about when my fire troupe does a performance in Tucson. We need to meet with the Fire department and get an official approval to do our show. One of the rules is that no one can be closer to 30 feet from the fire. Ok, that sure doesn’t hold true for Barcelona!

I found a great vista where I had a view of the beach and the fires with fireworks going off constantly. The only other party that rivaled this wild event was Burning Man. But I do think that the Fiesta de Sant Joan was much, much crazier than my experience at Burning Man, which I thought was impossible.

Here’s hoping that the pagan in all of us can feel free to experience life, fire, water and herbs fully. Thanks to the pagan side of Barcelona, I want to get even more wild and free in my future.

  • What's Up for Your Sign During Leo?

    Leo

Happy Birthday, amazing Leo! This will be quite a birthday for you with two Eclipses during this month. This will be one of the most powerful birthdays for you in a long time if you want to change your lifestyle. What do you want to release? How do you want to change? Now is your time! You can do it!

    Virgo

Venus is in Virgo until August 7th and now is the time to add some sweetness to your life. Feng Shui is favored so make your life more comfortable and start with your bedroom. Open it up and add more space to make it more beautiful.

    Libra

Once Venus leaves Virgo she goes into your sign of Libra. You will have from August 8th – September 9th with her in Libra. For a real treat, the Moon will join bright Venus from August 13th – 15th. Make sure you go outside and watch them. This is a set up for romance, loving Libra.

    Scorpio

Do you want to take a little holiday? Then you’re in luck because you have a perfect get away weekend on August 16th – 19th. You can either travel somewhere or you can just hide and hibernate that weekend. Trust your Scorpio intuition, which always knows the right thing for you to do.

    Sagittarius

The Sag in you always loves to travel and now is a great time. Pick a new destination and be bold and adventurous. This window won’t come again soon, so go for the exotic . . . why not?

    Capricorn

Mars is in Capricorn now and is doing a retrograde in your sign from August 12th until September 11th. Use that retrograde phase to take care of any old and unfinished business. The older and the more resistant the better. It might not be easy, but you will be free when it’s all cleaned out.

    Aquarius

Mars is doing a retrograde in Aquarius now and won’t leave until August 12th. This is a strong retrograde to rethink and release old themes. Once you let them go you can redirect your energy in a new and fresh way.

    Pisces

Your power time this month is the last few days in July and the very beginning of August. You will see old relationships in a new and different way. Make sure to tell your partners exactly how you feel to make a needed change. This will only take a little tweaking to fix.

    Aries

The first few days in August will be your best escape window. If you can possibly get away . . . please do it! If you can’t escape, at least take some special time for yourself and try something new. Even going to a matinee movie does wonders to switch the energy.

    Taurus

If you haven't already, early August will be a perfect time for you to change something big. With the great changer, Uranus, in your sign of Taurus now, you are restless and ready for a new life. Maybe you need a new hairstyle? Or be fierce and get a tatttoo . . . you know you want to get a bit wild!

    Gemini

This is your month to do some writing, smarty-pants Gemini. There is a group of planets in your house of writing now, so if you put on your thinking cap . . . amazing words will come out. Now is your time for brilliance, Gemini!

    Cancer

Creativity is coming to you, dear Cancer. Plan to take some time the week of August 6th and you will be surprised at the beautiful results. You may want to look at a new color scheme with a more tranquil and serene feeling to it. Blues and blue-greens are favored.

  • Astrology During Leo

The Sun enters the sign of Leo on July 22nd at 2:02 p.m., Mountain Time. Leo is a fire sign and is associated with the one and only Sun! Leo knows it is the center of the Zodiac, just like the Sun is in the middle of our Solar System. Leo is the entertainer and loves being the center of attention, of course. Not surprisingly, the heart is the part of the body that belongs to Leo. The heart is the focal point of the body and is also perfect because of the love and generosity exhibited by this dramatic sign. Leo has a youthful spirit and loves to play, even though this sign likes being in control.

This month is filled with exciting celestial events, starting with a Total Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius on July 27th. This will be a wild Eclipse of the Moon because the Moon will be joining feisty Mars during the Eclipse. It will be visible in the Eastern Europe, Middle East, Australia and Antarctica. For those enough lucky to see the Eclipse, make sure to notice the obvious Mars right next to the Eclipsed Moon. It should be quite a sight. For those who are just seeing the Full Moon, make sure you see Red Mars close to the Moon!

Since Mars is close to the Earth, it is very bright and red now. Mars will rise mid evening in the east and will be up in the sky all night. Make sure you take the time to notice how easily Mars can be seen now. The best months to see Mars will be July and August. Take your family and friends outside and point out Mars. You will be the hit of the night and my little astrologer at large. Remember all the planets are along the Ecliptic or the Great Highway in the Sky. Where the Sun is during the day is always, always where the planets are at night. So, take notice of the Sun’s path and you will know where to find Mars at night. It’s easier than you think.

This is quite the time for Mars, because not only will he be the brightest, he is also retrograding during this time. Mars will be retrograde in Aquarius and a bit of Capricorn from June 26th through August 27th. All retrogrades are times to rethink, regroup and remove old themes in your life. This is a slower planet than Mercury and will have a stronger retrograde than we’re used to. Mercury is about changing our mental attitudes, where Mars is more about changing our actions. Old patterns will become obsolete and you will realize many of your efforts from the past are now unnecessary and outdated. You will strive to become more efficient and will not want to waste your precious time with situations that no longer serve you. Be bold about changing patterns as this window doesn’t happen often.

Not only do we have a Lunar Eclipse, we also have a Partial Solar Eclipse. This will occur on August 11th and will be in the sign of Leo. This partial Eclipse of the Sun will only be visible in Canada, Greenland, the North Atlantic Ocean and Russia. Even though we can’t see an Eclipse, we can all feel it. All Eclipses are a time to look at your life in a new way. This month is quite special with two Eclipses and Mars doing a retrograde too. No matter what your sign in, take time this summer to let go of old patterns in your life and it will be easier than you think. Start with the simple stuff and when you feel more accomplished, then tackle the more entrenched patterns.

The visible planets will put on quite a show for us this month. Mercury can be seen for the first week or so in the sign of Leo until it gets lost in the glow of the Sun. In addition to Mercury, we can see All of the visible planets in the evening sky this month. Venus is bright and above the western horizon. Higher in the sky is big Jupiter with dim Saturn being to the east of Jupiter. Bright red Mars will top it off by looking further east. All of these will be in an easy arc in the sky called the Ecliptic. You can also use your smart phone with an app like Google’s Sky Map to spot the planets. But then put down your phone and see them all with your naked eye. The very best way to see the planets are not through your phone, binoculars or a telescope. Train your eyes to see them, as they have done for thousands of years. Remember this tip: Stars twinkle and planets shine. There is more of a steady light coming from the planets and once you can tell the difference, you will know if you are looking at a star or a planet. Easy.

See you next month in Virgo. Are we going into the autumn already?

  • My Summer in Barcelona

Hola amigos, como estan? Si, estoy en Barcelona!

Yes, I’m speaking Spanish 24/7 now that I’m living in Barcelona for the summer. Since the Sun is entering the sign of Cancer now, I thought it would be perfect to talk about my new home here. Not only is the Sun entering the sign of Cancer on June 21st, but the rebel, Uranus, has just entered the stable sign of Taurus. Since Uranus is such a slow-moving planet with an 84-year orbit, that’s a rare phase and will be with us until 2026. In fact, it is so rare that I wrote an entire article on Uranus’ ingress, or entrance into Taurus. If you haven’t read that article, please do, so you will be up to speed with this exciting time in humanity. Here it is, just in case you haven’t read it yet. http://www.susiecox.com/blog/uranus-in-taurus-barcelona-is-beckoning

For a brief summary of Uranus entering Taurus -- it’s going to bring excitement as well as uncertainty to us all. Uranus is associated with the wild sign of Aquarius, who loves change, just for the sake of change. Uranus is the planet that welcomes the future as it breaks old patterns with the past. On the other hand, Taurus doesn’t do well with change at all. That earthy, earth sign loves routine and stability. Yes, it’s an odd combination. Since Taurus relates to the earth, many astrologers are predicting earth changes. It has been interesting to see the massive volcanic activity in Hawaii as well as in Guatemala since Uranus entered Taurus. We can expect more of that.

One fascinating thing to note is that astrologers see a cross section of what the world is experiencing, through our clients. I’m noticing that almost half of the readings with my clients now are Astro*Carto*Graphy interpretations. They all want to see where they might want to move. I’ve done AstroMaps for many years, but suddenly, almost everyone wants that technique to help them made decisions. Astro*Carto*Graphy is a map showing your planetary lines and indicates your power spots around the world. Where was your Sun rising when you were born? That will be a place for a personal rebirth. Where was your Moon rising? That is a location I call “Your home away from home”. Your AstroMaps tell that and much more.

Typically, my clients have used it to decide where to travel for their family holiday or maybe where to move their business. But now it seems they’re using Astro*Carto*Graphy to decide where to move their home.  This transit of Uranus in Taurus will bring an exodus to the world. Or if you don’t want to move, you can make changes to your home and to your life. Are you bored and want a new career? Do you want to remodel? My Taurus sister is totally building a new kitchen, which has been exciting as well as completely disruptive for her. Yes, chaos is a keyword for Uranus. So, if you are having some yearnings for change . . . I’m writing this article for you.

Back to Barcelona -- after high school, I traveled here for the first time and have since then visited this beautiful city about a dozen times. I’ve always had a dream of spending more time here one day and it seems this Uranus transit was the trigger that allowed that to happen. When Uranus entered my 4th house of home, I rented a sweet Airbnb here from a lovely Italian woman and her daughter. It turned out to be the perfect arrangement for my first time really living here. Her home is in the Gotico neighborhood which is one of the oldest barrios in this medieval part of the city. The streets are pedestrian and are barely wide enough for a car, thank goodness. We live on the 3rd floor and with no elevator. (I counted 54 steps to get to our apartment). Hey, good for daily exercise. Here is my street in Gotico.

    La Vaca

While I’m here I am renting a co-working space at the very cool, La Vaca. It used to be an old dairy, which is why they chose the cow theme. They have created a great space for people who want to work with others. There are dozens of Vaqueros who are working on their laptops on individual desks. There is a shared kitchen, printer and scanner, lots of plants, a bar, pool table and a place to chill downstairs. One Vaquero brings her dog, so we have a resident pooch. Upstairs is a Skype booth which is where I’ll be talking to my clients. This is the first time I’ve been in a co-working space and it is very inspiring. I’m finding it a great place for me, since there aren’t as many distractions as I have at home. Yes, I’m an official Vaquero!

One exciting part about La Vaca as well as Barcelona in general is all the different languages spoken here. As with much of Europe, maybe with the exception of France, most people speak several different languages. The 10-year old daughter of my Airbnb host speaks 5 different languages! So I’m not only speaking Spanish, but they slip in a lot of Ciao in Italian too. My brain synapsis are working overtime, which is a very good thing!

    Lifestyle

One of the first things that I noticed was that I walk about twice as fast as everyone here. Even though it’s a big city, people almost stroll as they walk down the street. The first few days I tried to pass people walking but realized the people in front of them were walking just as slowly. Ok, I guess I have to slow down or walk in the streets. As I walk slower, my breathing also slows down. Since this is a pedestrian city, walking is the main mode of transportation. In addition to walking, there are Lots of bikes, scooters, skate boards and those little push scooters that we’re used to seeing only for children. Not here, plenty of adults use those cute little scooters too, which are adult-sized and some even have a little motor. Of course, mass transportation includes a great bus and subway system, they call the Metro. Spain makes the tickets for the Metro and buses quite inexpensive, in comparison to other countries. Yes, I’m a Metro girl now as I travel that way to go to La Vaca each day.

Another thing that was strikingly different from the US is that people are very slender here with hardly anyone over weight.  I'm sure that the natural food and so much walking contributes to the healthy bodies. Even though many people smoke and drink, they seem to handle it quite well. There aren't many street people or beggars, but there is one guy always in the same spot. He has four paper cups for donations. This is how they are labeled: "Beer, Weed, LSD and Disneyland". I guess food wasn't as important. Hey, at least he's saying what he wants!

Yes, Barcelona is a foodie city. Almost every block has fruit and vegetable stands that make Whole Foods look sad. I’m walking to the famous historic Mercado, Santa Caterina, for my grocery shopping about 3 times a week. Instead of shopping for the entire week, people here shop only for a couple of days. Then they shop again for their next few meals, which adds to the healthy lifestyle. Here is a typical picture of a Tapas sign. A bit tricky to figure out what you're eating.

I do admit that I’m a fashionista and wow, the fashion here is truly stunning. The Spanish women typically wear little kicky skirts with an off the shoulder almost peasant style blouse. Lots of lace cutouts for their fabrics. I would call the style sassy chic with an edgy flair. Many women, no matter the age, have very colorful hair. Pinks, purples and multi-color hair is common. And a huge percentage of people have tattoos. There are so many majorly tatted bodies. Speaking of tattoos, I decided that since I am being reborn here, I needed a tattoo also. So here is my butterfly or mariposa in Spanish.

Arch de Triumph and Park Ciutat Vella

It seems that most countries have an Arch de Triumph and Barcelona has one at the entrance of their big city park, complete with a Zoo. Families are having picnics with their well-behaved dogs, mostly off leashes. The dogs seem as mellow as their owners. The park has a lake in the middle with row boats and ducks. As I walked through the park, I came to their grand fountain, topped with golden horses. They really know how to do fountains and statues here so beautifully! Notice the interesting modes of transportation!

    Gaudi

The skyline of Barcelona is dominated by Gaudi’s huge unfinished church, the Sagrada Familia.  Antoni Gaudi (1852 – 1926) was a Spanish architect best known for what is called Catalan Modernism. He used broken tiles to make mosaics in his creative style with no square corners, which I’m sure was unsettling at the time. His main passions were architecture, religion and nature, which he wove seamlessly into his buildings. His masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, is the most-visited monument in Spain. Much of Barcelona is what I would call Gaudiesque as the city is filled with art, music and geckos crawling up the side of buildings!

    La Playa

Oh yes, Barcelona is a major port of the Mediterranean and La Playa, or the beach, is a main attraction of the city. Many of the fiestas happen on the beach as well as yoga, meditating and just playing in the water. I went to La Playa and the first thing I noticed it that most of the people on the beach weren’t wearing any clothes. No one was flaunting it, but quietly doing yoga with a bare bottom. Somehow it feels natural here….not so in Tucson. This picture is of my bag with my poi that I'm spinning on La Playa.

    The Planets

The only problem that I've had here is that it's hard to see the planets with all the tall buildings and small winding streets. I'm so used to seeing them each night from my big back yard inTucson and it threw me off, I admit. That is until I found Plaza Catalunya. This picture was taken on the evening of my birthday as I saw both the Moon and Venus. it was truly a birthday present from the Universe for me!

I know that this summer will somehow change me, in addition to the Uranus transit triggering off my chart. I do know that my already good relationship with food is different. I’ve gotten spoiled with all the organic mercados here. For sure my Spanish will get much better….mucho mejor. We’ll have to see what else will change by the time I re-enter Tucson as a new person. Que Bueno!

  • My Lectures at UAC 2018

During the last week in May, thousands of astrologers will be gathering at the Downtown Marriot in Chicago for an important astrological conference. UAC 2018, or United Astrology Conference, will be attracting astrologers from over 50 countries. There will be 170 speakers, chosen from the top astrologers in the world, to give over 300 lectures on their specialties. The very first UAC was in San Diego in 1986 and is one of the favorite conferences amongst professional astrologers. Here is the link for the conference for your interest: www.uacastrology.com.

These serious conferences draw not only professional astrologers, but also student astrologers as well as mathematicians, software geeks, psychologists, financial analysts as well as healers of all sorts. Oh yes, it’s a fascinating mix of brilliant minds. Even though there will be many languages there . . . we will all be speaking the ancient language of astrology. You will hear astrology spoken in elevators, at breakfast, in hallways, at the pool, as well at lectures. But the most astrology is done late at night in many hotel rooms as astrologers talk to each other until the wee hours of the morning. That is my favorite part --- hanging with my buddy astrologers.

Since astrology can be combined with so many other techniques, there are 15 different tracks, or styles of astrology, at UAC. Here are the tracks:

    1. Business Consulting and the Business of Astrology
    2. Cycles of Personal Development
    3. Electives and Astrological Specialties
    4. Financial Astrology and Economics
    5. Forecasting/Predictive Techniques
    6. Fundamentals of Astrology
    7. Health and Wellness
    8. History and Research
    9. Mythological and Archetypal
    10.  Natal Chart Delineation
    11.  Philosophical/Spiritual/Esoteric
    12.  Political and Mundane
    13.  Relationships
    14.  Traditional Astrology
    15.  Vedic Astrology

I know many of you would love to be there, at least in spirit, so here are my lectures so you can feel more connected. The topics they chose out of my list of lectures were: The Basics of Astro*Carto*Graphy and How to Write a Monthly Sun Sign Column.

Since my background is in astronomy, I specialize in Astro*Carto*Graphy. Last week I had eight charts and four of them were AstroMaps. People seem to be very interested now in finding out where they want to travel. Since I’m also a citizen of the world, this is one of my favorite astrological techniques. The geek in me loves maps of all kinds, so this works perfectly for me. People want their AstroMaps done so they can know: where to move, where to take holidays, where to find love or art or unusual experiences. Many now are having their entire families done so they can choose a good holiday that will work for everyone. This lecture is in the track of Electives and Astrological Specialties.

My other lecture is How to Write a Monthly Sun Sign Column. For the last 8 years I’ve been writing a monthly column, “What’s Your Sign”, for the world-famous designer, Tory Burch. We happen to share the same birthday of June 17, so we have a special connection. And yes, she and I are both quintessential Geminis! This lecture will be fun because we’ll be actually writing a Sun Sign column during my talk, so it will be totally hands-on! This lecture is in the track of Business Consulting and the Business of Astrology.

Of course, there will be evenings of entertainment, a dance party cruise on the river and a Gala awards ceremony where we will acknowledge the best in our profession. Everyone will be in their finest attire and ready to celebrate a successful conference. I will write an article for my Cancer newsletter on how UAC inspired me. Off now to pack some nice clothes for my trip!

  • Astrology During Gemini

The Sun enters the sign of Gemini on May 20th at 7:16 p.m., Mountain Time. Gemini is an air sign and is associated with the planet of communication, Mercury. Gemini is the student/teacher of the Zodiac and loves to share knowledge with the world. Typical Gemini occupations are authors, teachers, public speakers and entrepreneurs.

We don’t have any Eclipses and Mercury retrograde isn’t happening until July. But we do have a lot of ingresses, or planets changing signs this month. The big one is Uranus leaving Aries and entering Taurus that happened on May 16th. Uranus will be in the new sign of Taurus until 2026, so this is an important phase that we’ve just entered. This is such a big event that I wrote an entire article about it for the Taurus Newsletter. If you missed it, here is the link: http://susiecox.com/blog/uranus-in-taurus-barcelona-is-beckoning

Venus will enter the sign of Cancer and will be there until it goes into Leo on June 14th. This is the time to give hugs to your loved ones. Tell them how much you appreciate them and show it. This would be a great time to have a mini-family reunion. Make sure to have lots of comfort food there for everyone.

The mental planet Mercury will go into its sign of Gemini on May 30th. If anyone has writing projects to complete, this is the best time. Bring out what you have started and just finish it. You will be in the mood!

As far as the visible planets go this month, we are in for a treat. Venus is now the “Evening Star” and can be seen shining brightly above the western horizon. Jupiter has now moved from the morning sky and is now visible in the evening sky, rising in the east right after sunset. For the early risers, Mars and Saturn are in the western sky right before sunrise. Quite soon they will both be moving into the evening sky. Soon we will have several planets in the evening sky for your viewing pleasure.

One more exciting thing is happening with the visible planets. Mars will be getting close to the Earth and will therefore become very bright red. If you remember, Mars was bright red in 2003. Well this year, it will be just as bright and some think may even be brighter. It will be 1.8 times brighter than Jupiter at its peak! When will that occur – July 2018. For the next couple of months, Mars will be getting brighter. I’ll be keeping everyone posted on when is the best time to watch bright Mars!

I’ll see everyone next for Cancer and the Summer Solstice!

Mars will enter Aquarius on May 16th and will be there all the way until November 16th. This is an extra-long time in your sign because Mars will be doing a retrograde. Be prepared to release objects or patterns that need to go.

    Pisces

Mid-May is your power time, sweet Pisces. Your creativity will be at a high at that time. Give it a push and you will see a new genre or style emerging. This one is successful enough that it’s worth marketing.

    Aries

Talkative Mercury is in Aries until May 14th. This is your time to organize your files and emails and to do any writing that needs done. In addition, you will feel social during these times. Reach out to your friends and have fun!

  • Astrology During Taurus

The Sun enters the sign of Taurus on April 19th at 8:14 p.m., Mountain Time. Taurus is an earth sign and is associated with the loving planet, Venus. Taurus is the banker of the Zodiac and somehow always attracts luxury. I call it the sign of creature comforts. My sister is a Taurus and has the best clothes, and guess what . . . she gets them mostly as a deal. Yes, she goes to the most expensive shops and gets amazing finds on the sale rack!  She’s a good Taurus!

We are fully in spring and Taurus brings a sensuality to the season. Spring fever is in total control now. Make sure you take some time to go out in nature to enjoy this precious time of the year. At least here in Tucson, this is the time for hikes before it gets real hot, which will happen soon.

There are no Eclipses this month and Mercury has just turned direct after it’s rough retrograde in feisty Aries. I noticed many people feeling frustrated or aggitated, over not much reason. Aries will do that.

The big thing happening this month is that the very slow-moving planet, Uranus, is entering a new sign. The ingress, or change to a new sign, occurs on May 15th. Uranus has an orbit of 84 years so it is therefore in a sign for approximately 9 years. So Uranus will be in Taurus from May 2018 until April 2026, when he enters Gemini. Uranus is officially a slow guy, but don’t let his speed fool you . . . he carries quite a punch. Uranus is associated with the sign of Aquarius and I’ve named this planet, the Rebel. Uranus promotes sudden change. This time, Uranus is entering the earth sign of Taurus, which will shake things up a bit. This is such an important phase that I’m writing an entire article about it for this newsletter.

We have a couple of other ingresses this month. Creative Venus will be entering the sign of Gemini on April 24th until May 20th. If you have some art projects, especially with some writing involved . . . now is your time. Maybe organize your office and files. Taking a short trip to a spa to get some pampering. Connect with loved ones that you haven’t talked to for a while. Be kind to yourself. Let your creativity flow!

About the visible planets, we’re in for a treat this month. In the predawn sky now, you can see Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and dim Mercury. Mars and Saturn are very closes to each other now. They are all along the Ecliptic, or the Great Highway in the sky for the planets. Once you find that arch, you can’t miss them. After sunset, Venus is the “Evening Star” now. You can see her shining brightly in the western sky.

Have a fun spring and I’ll see you in Gemini!

  • UAC 2018: An Astrology Conference

Astrologers from about 50 countries will be gathering together late May at the Downtown Marriot in Chicago for UAC 2018 or the United Astrology Conference. These serious conferences occur every few years and are very much anticipated by many astrologers. The first UAC happened in San Diego in 1986 and this will be the ninth conferences since then. I’ve had the pleasure of being a speaker at all of the UACs and am speaking again for this one. There will be 186 well-known astrologers from many parts of the world speaking there. www.uacastrology.com

Since only professional astrologers or dedicated students of this ancient art attend these conferences, I thought it would be good to let everyone know what happens there. Astrology is such an intriguing subject that it attracts everyone from astrologers, mathematicians, statisticians, software geeks, counsellors, psychologists, financial analysts, healers, artists to full-fledged, crystal-carrying hippies. But one thing is true with all the attendants – they really love astrology.

Even though the actual conference lasts five days, it opens with a pre-conference and ends with a post-conference. These are half-day workshops presented by popular astrologers. But even before the pre-conference, there are three full days of Consulting Skills Training for new astrologers to learn more about how to work with clients.

The grand opening ceremony starts the official conference with an ice cream social to follow. Of course, I’ll be seeing many, many of my astrology buddies from all the conference I’ve spoken at over the last four decades. We’re like this huge, slightly dysfunctional family. But, since we only see each other on occasion, we mostly get along.  I do admit there are some intellectual rifts that certain astrologers seem to attract, but we mostly like and respect each other. I’ll also be meeting several of my astrology students there and some for the first time. It will be so wonderful to put a face to a familiar voice. Of course I’ll be making some new friends with astrologers I’ll be just meeting there, too.

UAC has a big book store, where you can buy astrology books, many of which were written by the speakers. There will also be a fun Trade Show, where you can buy astrological goodies that can only be found at conferences. Do you want the newest software? How about a crystal necklace with all your planets in their order around your neck? What about a silk robe, befitting of an astrologer? Yep. All there and much more.

One fascinating thing about astrology is that it can be used with many diverse subjects. UAC divides the different styles up into 15 unique tracks, so you can attend the lectures that speak to your style. There is a lecture in all these tracks happening in different rooms at the same time, so you can choose which one you want to attend. There are four different lecture times during the day. So that’s 60 lectures per day! Of course, they are all professionally recorded so the attendees can buy them and listen to the lectures again in either CD or mp3 formats.

    Here are the tracks:

    1. Business Consulting and the Business of Astrology
    2. Cycles of Personal Development
    3. Electives and Astrological Specialties
    4. Financial Astrology and Economics
    5. Forecasting/Predictive Techniques
    6. Fundamentals of Astrology
    7. Health and Wellness
    8. History and Research
    9. Mythological and Archetypal
    10.  Natal Chart Delineation
    11.  Philosophical/Spiritual/Esoteric
    12.  Political and Mundane
    13.  Relationships
    14.  Traditional Astrology
    15.  Vedic Astrology

Most of you are used to me interpreting birth charts, transits, comparisons and Astro*Carto*Graphy. But believe me, there are astrologers who are experts in mostly medical astrology or financial astrology. Since astrology is a symbolic language, it can easily be used in all these various traditions.

What am I speaking about? Here are my two lectures:

    • The Basics of Astro*Carto*Graphy.
    • How to Write a Monthly Sun Sign Column

My background in astronomy combined with so many of my clients being spread out around the world, Astro*Carto*Graphy was a natural for me. About one third of my clients want their Maps done, so I have lots of practice with that technique. Being a citizen of the world myself, I adore looking at maps of all kinds. This lecture is in the category of Astrological Specialties.

How to write a Sun Sign column comes easily to me since I’ve been writing for the famous designer, Tory Burch, since 2010.  She publishes my column, “What’s Your Sign” on her blog each month. I’ll be actually writing a Sun sign column with the attendees of my lecture – so they’re in for a real treat. Why not be hands-on! This lecture is in the category of the Business of Astrology.

In addition to the many lectures planned, there are evenings of entertainment from a silent auction, a jazz evening to a party dance cruise. Remember that UAC is in Chicago and we’ll be taking an evening cruise one evening. I admit that most of my entertainment will be getting together with my astrologer buddies late at night, in our hotel rooms, with talking astrology until the wee hours. Even though astrologers are mental, it might be a few more years until we’ll all be together again, so parties are a must.

The conference ends with a gala evening with the Marion D. March Regulus Awards Banquet. Everyone dresses up, eats a delicious meal and takes lots of pictures. There are several awards given out to outstanding astrologers in their individual fields. For me, this is one of the highlights of the conference. I always love a good reason to dress up.

Not only will I return from this UAC with more astrological knowledge, but I’ll also have a warm feeling inside knowing I’ve seen my esteemed colleagues one more time. That’s why our tag line is . . . See you at UAC!

  • Astrology During Aries

The Sun enters the sign of Aries on March 20th at 10:19 a.m., Mountain Time. Aries is a fire sign and is associated with the warrior of the Zodiac, Mars.  Aries is the pioneer of all the signs and starts the Astrological New Year. This fire sign likes to drive fast, talks loudly and be the first in line. Coffee is the drug of choice for the speedy Aries. Of course, bright red it their color.

Welcome to the Spring Equinox! Each year the beginning of Aries marks the new season of spring. Like Stonehenge, people all over the world are celebrating the Equinox. The year is divided into quarters for the four different seasons. Aries and Libra are the two Equinoxes and start the spring and fall seasons. Equinox means equal nights and is when the length of the days and nights are equal. Cancer and Capricorn are the two Solstices and start the summer and winter seasons. On the Summer Solstice, the days are the longest. On the Winter Solstice, the days are the shortest. This is of course only for the Northern Hemisphere, since the seasons are opposite in the Southern Hemisphere.

We start the spring off with Mercury turning retrograde from March 22nd through April 15th.  This Mercury Retrogrades lands in Aries, which is the sign of new beginnings. This is the perfect time for a spring housecleaning and getting rid of what you are no longer using. This will also be good for changing deep patterns in your life. What do you want to release? Aries will let it go and Fast! Interestingly enough, Mercury turns direct on April 15th, which is also the New Moon in Aries. That timing will help move forward any sudden changes that you want to create.

This year has two Blue Moons, which is pretty rare. A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month. There was a Full Moon on January 1st and a Blue Moon on January 31st. February didn’t even have one Full Moon. That leaves March with two Full Moons. So March 1st is a Full Moon and March 31st is the second Blue Moon of the year. It will also be the last Blue Moon of 2018. Even though this is just a synchronization of the calendar and the lunar cycle, it’s still important. What do two Blue Moons mean? I think it’s a gift to humanity to help uplift the world right now.

Mars has now entered the sign of Capricorn and will join both Saturn and Pluto. Mars joins Saturn on April 2nd and will join Pluto on April 26th. Capricorn is the sign of government, rules and regulations and corporations. Mars is always a trigger to release the bigger group of planets. So we can all watch these dates for peaks in that area, but the entire month of April is charged. If you have important projects you are working on, these are push dates to focus on them.

Regarding the planets, we can see all the visible planets now. Venus is now the “Evening Star” and can be seen after sunset. She will be up in the evening sky until October, so we can see her for a while now. I love Venus seeing her after sunset. Mercury has been traveling with Venus and can both be seen low along the western horizon right after the Sun sets. Mercury is much not as bright as Venus and you might need binoculars to help see him more easily. Once Mercury retrogrades on March 23rd, it will disappear into the glow of the Sun and can’t be seen. Try to see Venus and Mercury together for a real treat!

Have a fabulous month and I’ll see you in Taurus!

The Full Moon will be in Libra this month on March 31st. Since there was a Full Moon on March 1st, the second one in the same calendar month is called a Blue Moon. This is a gift, because it’s so rare. Expect gifts from unexpected places this month.

    Pisces

You are already creative, but it will be taken to new heights during mid to late April. Plan to take lots of time to allow your imagination to take over. Relax, meditate and create. Look for something new.

  • The Colors of India

As I sit down to write this article on my experiences in India, the sweet smell of incense and a whirl of colors are going through my mind. It truly was a grand experience to speak at the 41st annual conference hosted by the Indian Institute of Oriental Heritage. My fellow colleagues and I were given awards of excellence in a very regal and ceremonial fashion, Indian style.

The colleagues I connected with were the very knowledgeable Sasha Yungju Lee, who practices Chinese Astrology and Chinese Feng Shui. She’s Korean and puts her cultural style into her interpretations. She and I were the only women to receive awards, among many men. It was an honor to be with her and we became fast friends through our travels.

My other esteemed colleague was Dr. T. Selva from Malaysia, who practices Indian Feng Shui, which is called Vasthu Sastra. He speaks all over the world sharing his unique perspective on his craft. He was a gracious guide to both me and Sasha, since he knows India quite well.

The conference was held in New Delhi, which is like the New York City of India. So I decided to go to Goa first, which is like the Hawaii of India. Goa is on the ocean just south of Mumbai and was the perfect place to get to know an old-fashioned part of India before I was thrown into the big city. This is where I discovered the colors of India. I realize that it all starts with the spices. The powerful golden rod is from turmeric. The brilliant red is from chili peppers. The bright green is from cilantro. Of course spices and food are the basics of Ayer Vedic healing. Those intense colors are the dyes for their bright and stunning colors in their fabrics. For any of those of you who know me personally, I have a very definite color palette. Oh my, India has all my colors. I would wear a bright saree with lots of bangle bracelets every day if I could. Somehow, it won’t work here in Tucson. Darn!

What did I do in Goa? I walked on the beach, ate lots of fresh seafood, danced to rhythmic techno Indian fusion music and talked to people from all over the world. Most people were from Europe and not many Americans. I went to a spice plantation and saw spices growing on trees, like, cardamom, cinnamon, peppercorns and cloves. It was so wild to pick a clove off the tree. I also got a very intense Ayervedic massage, that was not like any massage I’ve ever had before.

Goa felt like a big farm to me where the animals rule. I rented a bamboo tree house at the cozy Michele’s Garden little hotel. Michele was the best and I would stay there again without a doubt. It was like living in Paradise! One morning, from my balcony, I saw a peacock in a tree, in my backyard. You don’t see that every day. Here are the animals I saw in Goa: Water Buffalos, Cows (lots of cows), Bulls, Dogs (lots of skinny dogs), Goats, Squirrels, Roosters, Chickens and Peacocks. Yes, I drank fresh milk each day from cows and Water Buffalos for my tea. It was the creamiest, best milk ever. My stay there was so fabulous that I cried when I left Goa.

Balancing the nature of Goa with the intense population and smog of New Delhi, was the best way to see India. Someone asked me what India smelled like. I have to say that it was the sweet smell of incense, which was burning everywhere next to a statue of Ganesh. So I’m left with the bright colors, the smell of spices and incense and the feeling of an ancient culture trying to merge with the new world. My hopes are that the sweet smell of incense and the brilliant colors of spices will win.

  • Astrology During Pisces

The Sun enters the sign of Pisces on February 18th at 10:19 a.m., Mountain Time. Pisces is a water sign and is associated with the mystic of the Zodiac, nebulous Neptune.  Pisces is the Dreamer of all the signs of the Zodiac and usually lives in a bubble. The rest of the world doesn’t exist much of the time for this creative sign. Pisces is the guru or the druggie. This is the sign that needs to be in an altered state of consciousness, whether it’s through meditation, yoga, music or a glass of wine.

If you remember, we just had a Super Blue Moon Eclipse on January 31st. A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a calendar month. We had a Blue Moon in January and we will have one in March as well, but with no Eclipse this time. The first Full Moon this month will be on March 1st and is in the sign of Virgo. Then the second Full Moon or the Blue Moon will happen on March 31st and is in the sign of Libra. February squeezed by with having no Full Moon at all. Once in a Very Blue Moon, as the song says, is a rare and special thing. I consider these two Blue Moons gifts to humanity.

There is a party of planets in Pisces now, but some of those planets will be moving into Aries, which will make us all more ready to initiate projects. Usually the laid-back Pisces likes to dream and not act as much as Aries. The combination is creative as well as forward moving. Mercury enters Aries on March 5th and Venus enters Aries on March 6th. So the Aries energy should kick in around then. Save any projects that need effort for after that time. If you want to do some writing, this is your time!

Daylight Savings Time is upon us again and will begin on March 11th. Much of the world and most of the US observes this twice a year event and will move their clocks forward one hour. Of course, in the autumn, the clocks are moved back one hour.  Arizona and Hawaii don’t observe this time-bending ritual, which always makes it tricky for me during these two transition weeks. Even though I try, I usually am an hour off with at least one client. Not my favorite time of the year, I admit.

There is a group of planets forming in Capricorn now, which is so important that I’ve been writing about it. The sign of Capricorn is about rules and regulations, government, corporations and the elite. Power hungry Pluto has been in Capricorn since 2008 and Saturn entered Capricorn on December 2017. Now feisty little Mars is joining them both. Mars enters Capricorn on March 17th and remains there until May 16th. Mars could easily bring heat to already hot situations, often triggering off events. Mars joins Saturn on April 1st and then joins Pluto on April 26th. So this will be a good moth to watch these important dates.

Looking at the visible planets this month, we still have most of our planets in the morning predawn sky. If you get up about ½ hour before sunrise, you will see Jupiter, Mars and Saturn along the Ecliptic. But finally the late sleepers will have a treat. Venus has emerged as the “Evening Star” now and can be seen low in the western horizon after sunset. I always love her in the evening sky.

Have a fabulous month and I’ll see you in Aries!

  • The Chinese New Year 2018 Earth Dog

The Chinese New Year starts at a different date each year. The beginning is at sunset on the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice. All this is based on when it happens in China. Like Western Astrology, the Chinese Zodiac has 12 signs, or animals. This year the animal is the stable Earth Dog. This year will be quite a contrast to the volatile Fire Rooster of 2017 that is just ending. For a reminder about the out-of-control Rooster, here is an abbreviated excerpt from my last year’s Preview for 2017 from The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes (1979) by Theodora Lau. “The personality of the Fire Rooster is arrogant, overly confident, and prone to large, ambitious and unrealistic plans . . . argumentative and shines when he’s the center of attention.”

The Earth Dog will be so completely different that the style of things should change to reflect the new Chinese sign. As contrast, this will come as a soothing time, although it will have the possibility of conservative thought and actions. So what is the Dog about? The Chinese Dog is loyal, steady, stubborn, fair, effective and passionate. His ideals and morals are not only above reproach, but direct the Dog’s focus. He has very strong beliefs, which are very difficult to change.  He is the open-minded sentry who is guarding the interest of the public at large by preserving social goals. The Dog is intelligent, honest, straightforward and has a sense of equality and fair play. Libra is the Western correlation to the Dog. Money is not the motivating factor of this sign. This animal likes to meet people half way and is good at listening and offering reason.  This doesn’t mean that the Dog can’t snarl and have a sharp tongue, since they are quite outspoken and highly opinionated. The Dog’s leadership is unemotional. This animal is an introvert and pessimist who doesn’t enjoy the public eye.

Now let’s overlay the element of Earth on the Dog. The Earth element brings a sense of calm to the already steady Dog. This will bring efficient and constructive thinking; moving ahead slowly with purpose; careful use of money; kind hearted spirit and practical vs sentimental. The Earth Dog is quiet and will not abuse powers given to him and will be good at delegating with a keen sense of the skills of the people.

The pendulum always swings and this is quite a large change from the Fire Rooster of 2017. Life unfolds exactly as it should, so this will be fun to watch.

  • Once in a Very Blue Moon

So what is a Blue Moon? When there are two Full Moons in one month, the second one is called a Blue Moon. As the lyrics read from that classic song, “Just once in a very blue moon, and I feel one comin’ on soon”. Yes, one is comin’ soon . . .  on January 31st.

Remember that 2018 started with a Super Moon on January 1st. A Super Moon is when the Full Moon is closer to the Earth and appears a bit larger. It is actually 14% larger than the smallest Moon, which is quite significant and noticeable with the naked eye.  But there’s more!

Not only is this a Super Moon and a Blue Moon – it’s also an Eclipse. So I would call its official title a Super Blue Moon Eclipse! That doesn’t happen too often. This Eclipse falls in the sign of Leo, which will make it important for that fire sign.  An Eclipse is the best time to release old patterns in your life and we will all feel it, even if we’re not Leo.

The year of 2018 is an unusual year relating to Blue Moons. January will have two Full Moons with the last one being the Eclipsed Blue Moon. February doesn’t have even one Full Moon, but March will have two Full Moons with the last one being the second Blue Moon of the year. But it won’t be an Eclipse, like in the Blue Moon in January. Most years will only have one Blue Moon in a year. There are 12 months and 13 Lunations, creating one Blue Moon per year. But since 2018 started with a Full Moon, it snuck in an extra Blue Moon.

What does this all mean astrologically? It is a gift to us to have 2 Blue Moons in one year. Anything rare is a gift. Early in 2018 will be the time for us all to see our lives in a totally new way. What are we waiting for? Now is the time for change. This can be a release of outer possessions or obvious life situations and routines that need to be changed. It can also be letting go of inner patterns, including outdated emotions and beliefs. Let’s all take this challenge to help us become our most optimum selves so we contribute our gifts more fully to the world. If we all do that, the world will be even a better home for us all.

    Happy Blue Moons!
