• UAC 2018: An Astrology Conference

Astrologers from about 50 countries will be gathering together late May at the Downtown Marriot in Chicago for UAC 2018 or the United Astrology Conference. These serious conferences occur every few years and are very much anticipated by many astrologers. The first UAC happened in San Diego in 1986 and this will be the ninth conferences since then. I’ve had the pleasure of being a speaker at all of the UACs and am speaking again for this one. There will be 186 well-known astrologers from many parts of the world speaking there. www.uacastrology.com

Since only professional astrologers or dedicated students of this ancient art attend these conferences, I thought it would be good to let everyone know what happens there. Astrology is such an intriguing subject that it attracts everyone from astrologers, mathematicians, statisticians, software geeks, counsellors, psychologists, financial analysts, healers, artists to full-fledged, crystal-carrying hippies. But one thing is true with all the attendants – they really love astrology.

Even though the actual conference lasts five days, it opens with a pre-conference and ends with a post-conference. These are half-day workshops presented by popular astrologers. But even before the pre-conference, there are three full days of Consulting Skills Training for new astrologers to learn more about how to work with clients.

The grand opening ceremony starts the official conference with an ice cream social to follow. Of course, I’ll be seeing many, many of my astrology buddies from all the conference I’ve spoken at over the last four decades. We’re like this huge, slightly dysfunctional family. But, since we only see each other on occasion, we mostly get along.  I do admit there are some intellectual rifts that certain astrologers seem to attract, but we mostly like and respect each other. I’ll also be meeting several of my astrology students there and some for the first time. It will be so wonderful to put a face to a familiar voice. Of course I’ll be making some new friends with astrologers I’ll be just meeting there, too.

UAC has a big book store, where you can buy astrology books, many of which were written by the speakers. There will also be a fun Trade Show, where you can buy astrological goodies that can only be found at conferences. Do you want the newest software? How about a crystal necklace with all your planets in their order around your neck? What about a silk robe, befitting of an astrologer? Yep. All there and much more.

One fascinating thing about astrology is that it can be used with many diverse subjects. UAC divides the different styles up into 15 unique tracks, so you can attend the lectures that speak to your style. There is a lecture in all these tracks happening in different rooms at the same time, so you can choose which one you want to attend. There are four different lecture times during the day. So that’s 60 lectures per day! Of course, they are all professionally recorded so the attendees can buy them and listen to the lectures again in either CD or mp3 formats.

    Here are the tracks:

    1. Business Consulting and the Business of Astrology
    2. Cycles of Personal Development
    3. Electives and Astrological Specialties
    4. Financial Astrology and Economics
    5. Forecasting/Predictive Techniques
    6. Fundamentals of Astrology
    7. Health and Wellness
    8. History and Research
    9. Mythological and Archetypal
    10.  Natal Chart Delineation
    11.  Philosophical/Spiritual/Esoteric
    12.  Political and Mundane
    13.  Relationships
    14.  Traditional Astrology
    15.  Vedic Astrology

Most of you are used to me interpreting birth charts, transits, comparisons and Astro*Carto*Graphy. But believe me, there are astrologers who are experts in mostly medical astrology or financial astrology. Since astrology is a symbolic language, it can easily be used in all these various traditions.

What am I speaking about? Here are my two lectures:

    • The Basics of Astro*Carto*Graphy.
    • How to Write a Monthly Sun Sign Column

My background in astronomy combined with so many of my clients being spread out around the world, Astro*Carto*Graphy was a natural for me. About one third of my clients want their Maps done, so I have lots of practice with that technique. Being a citizen of the world myself, I adore looking at maps of all kinds. This lecture is in the category of Astrological Specialties.

How to write a Sun Sign column comes easily to me since I’ve been writing for the famous designer, Tory Burch, since 2010.  She publishes my column, “What’s Your Sign” on her blog each month. I’ll be actually writing a Sun sign column with the attendees of my lecture – so they’re in for a real treat. Why not be hands-on! This lecture is in the category of the Business of Astrology.

In addition to the many lectures planned, there are evenings of entertainment from a silent auction, a jazz evening to a party dance cruise. Remember that UAC is in Chicago and we’ll be taking an evening cruise one evening. I admit that most of my entertainment will be getting together with my astrologer buddies late at night, in our hotel rooms, with talking astrology until the wee hours. Even though astrologers are mental, it might be a few more years until we’ll all be together again, so parties are a must.

The conference ends with a gala evening with the Marion D. March Regulus Awards Banquet. Everyone dresses up, eats a delicious meal and takes lots of pictures. There are several awards given out to outstanding astrologers in their individual fields. For me, this is one of the highlights of the conference. I always love a good reason to dress up.

Not only will I return from this UAC with more astrological knowledge, but I’ll also have a warm feeling inside knowing I’ve seen my esteemed colleagues one more time. That’s why our tag line is . . . See you at UAC!
